John Willes Johnson (1793-1863) Boates moored, with tide going out Oil on canvas Signed and dated 1830 lower right Canvas Size - 15 x 15 in Framed Size - 16 x 18 1/2 in John Samuel Willes Johnson (1793-1863) was a British naval officer and an artist. Born in South Stoke, Somerset, to Charles Johnson and Mary Willes, he embarked on a naval career in 1807, serving in various capacities and participating in significant naval engagements, including the bombardment of Algiers. He retired from active service in 1842 and was promoted to Captain in 1847. Following his military career, he went on to become an accomplished artist, known for his maritime paintings.
