About the Item

From Robertson's Artist Statement, "Growing up on the plains of west Texas, I understood the notion of wide, open spaces. The tabletop landscape was dotted by the repeating shapes of telephone poles and petroleum tanks as they receded into the distance. It was the small things that gave the Llano its bigness. When I escaped and began to see more of the world, I was always attracted to the subtleties of places and situations: shapes of shadows, the color of sunlight, temperatures, etc. I noticed, as I began to paint, that memories of these things evolved; the details altered, thoughts and emotions edited. Have you ever looked at an old photo and realized you had remembered things completely different? My art has much to do with this sense of fleeting atmospheres. To me, the paintings are distilled records of ever-changing spatial events in my past and necessarily in my future." Notes: Palm Trees, Los Angeles, Zoo Color: Yellow, Beige, Blue, Green

Bay View

"Lone Star, True But Whatever There was I time when I ached for the world. Before cell phones, before social media, I felt the urgency of environmental damage, of social injustice. Nothing seems to have gotten better. I'm not numb to it, but in some way I've become flip, a resigned humor like a layer of scar tissue between my concerns and the abrasion all around. Still, I was surprised how playful these paintings became. Disasters intertwine: Urns, much like the one that held my twin sister's ashes, a familial disaster, come to the forefront, variations of childhood memory. Images from photos I took in Port Aransas...

Brad Robertson has painted all his life. Born and raised in the coastal town of Mobile, Alabama, his earliest inspiration was the landscape- the indigenous pines and oak trees, and the waters of Mobile Bay. The coastal landscape is still a major source of inspiration for Robertson. At Auburn University...
