About the Item

A wonderful depiction of modern transportation and American industrialism in the early 20th Century. This painting is beautifully done in an impressionistic style by the accomplished artist Jonas Lie (1880 -1940). This painting was exhibited in the Spirit of Transportation exhibition, commissioned by Clark Equipment Company in 1920, where Jonas Lie was one of the twelve artists featured. The exhibition was focused on the societal and cultural significance of the automobile in addition to it's practical uses. Prominent artists of the period were commissioned to create artworks and were also eligible for a $1,000 prize. Jonas Lie shared the prize with Maxfield Parrish. Paintings from the exhibition were auctioned by Sotheby's New York in 2001 after having been rediscovered in the 1980s. Jonas Lie was a Norwegian-born American painter and teacher. Well regarded in his lifetime, he was a friend of Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt. He is known for his Expressionist paintings of the New England coastline and New York City. He documented the construction of the Panama Canal with thirty canvases and represented the United States in the 1928 Summer Olympics art competition.
