About

JOSÉ ARPA PEREA Spanish, 1858 - 1952 FERIA DE SEVILLA signed & titled "J. Arpa", Feria de Sevilla (lower left) oil on panel 8-1/2 X 10-3/4 inches (21.5 X 27 cm.) framed: 13-1/2 X 15-3/4 inches (34 X 40 cm.) PROVENANCE Private Collection, Seville, Spain José Arpa Perea (Carmona, February 19, 1858 - Seville, October 1952) was a Spanish landscape painter who developed much of his work in North America during the middle thirty years of his long life. Son of a cobbler of Carmona, with just ten years he moved to live in Seville where he alternated his work as a fat brush painter with night classes at the School of Fine Arts of St. Elizabeth of Hungary in Seville, where he began studies in 1876, under the influence of Eduardo Cano. He then traveled to Rome, where he lived between 1883 and 1886, passing enough needs, with a diminished scholarship from the Sevillian Provincial Council and painted canvases of historical themes such as "The exhibition of the body of Miguel de Mañara". He returned to study in Seville. He was commissioned to decorate the Mecantil Circle and the Hispanic Military Casino. In 1895, he developed his side as an orientalist painter on a trip to Morocco. In 1896 he embarks to Mexico where he lived until 1910. The Mexican Revolution ended up displacing him to San Antonio (Texas), in the United States, where he run a painting academy and later he would decorate the new building of the Texas Daily Express (1929). During the 32 years American made frequent trips to Spain, with long stays in Seville and trips along the Cantabrian coast. Always in contact, throughout his life, with the landscapers of the School of Alcalá de Guadaíra he made a retrospective exhibition of his landscapes in 1932. Two years later he was appointed favorite son of Carmona. He died in Seville in the fall of 1952. In 1998 a retrospective exhibition was organized in Seville in his tribute, gathering part of his Latin American work.
