Mid Century California Mountaintops Forest Landscape by Joseph Frey
Beautiful and serene mid-century landscape of snowy California mountaintops by listed California artist Joseph Frey (American, 1892 - 1977). The dramatic peaks tower over a glassy mountain lake surrounded by tall evergreen trees, creating an idyllic scene.
Signed "Joseph Frey" lower left.
Displayed in a giltwood frame.

Born in Walla Walla, Washington on October 17, 1892. At age sixteen Frey began his art studies at the Art Institute of Chicago. He opened his first studio in 1915 in San Francisco during the furor of the Panama Pacific International Exposition and painted many harbor scenes in and around the bay.
After serving in World War One, he sailed out of San Francisco and spent many years at sea working as a chef and studying painting in various ports. By 1928 he had settled in southern California where he lived and worked as a chef in Los Angeles, Palm Springs, and Santa Barbara.

Joseph Frey
Joseph Frey was born in Walla Walla, Washington, D.C., on October 17, 1892. At age 16, Frey began his art studies at the Art Institute of Chicago. He opened his first studio in 1915 in San Francisco, during the furor of the Panama Pacific International Exposition and painted many harbor scenes in and around the bay. Hannig, born in Hirschberg, Germany on 27 February 1883, came to America with his parents at the age of seven. He attended school in the southwest suburbs before the family settled in Chicago. Young Henry enrolled in the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts where Lawton Parker became his mentor. He made ends meet by working in industrial design and illustration.
By 1908 he was a pupil in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where students followed the traditional European drawing curriculum, beginning with the copying of master engravings and drawing after plaster casts, then concentrating on the nude figure.
