About the Item
Joseph Kaplan was a prolific Russian-American printmaker and painter who lived and worked between New York City and Provincetown, Massachusetts. He studied art in New York City at the Educational Alliance Art School as well as the National Academy of Design, and was an influential artist in Provincetown and was appointed an honorary vice-president and trustee of the Provincetown Art Association in 1955.
Kaplan worked widely in landscapes and figure studies, but also created works that were more abstract, as with this expressive marine scene. This undated smaller work likely from the late 1950s is an exhibition of the artist’s interest in the suggestion of shapes in a limited perspective, and features Kaplan’s ability to suggest movement in the most subtle ways: the softly-rendered ripples, the quietly-lifted bows.
