About the Item

Oil on marble 18,5 x 35 cm (25 x 41,5 cm with frame) = 7.3 × 13.8 in (9.8 × 16.3 in with frame) Signed lower left A marble landscape, heavenly Jerusalem, an ancient city lashed by waves, plunged into a dreamlike night: Joséphine Beaudouin's brush becomes one with the marble. The nature of the material—its veining, grain, and oxidation—reveals a fantastical, irrational landscape from which springs an ancient city, a “whim,” an intellectualized imagination. A pier crossing the marble, towers and palaces rising from the waves: the boundaries of consciousness are blurred by the multiple interactions between the material and the meticulously revealed subject. Surrealist, nourished by a baroque imagination, Joséphine Beaudouin's work is, strictly speaking, “fantastic” or chthonic, and “Neptunian”: these elements merge into an uncertain and fascinating world. “The viewer is petrified by the marble enchantments of the sorceress.” — Jean Cocteau After a provincial childhood, Joséphine Beaudouin moved to Paris at the age of twelve. Her mother hosted a literary salon frequented by Colette, Francis Carco, Fayard, Ambroise Vollard, André Favory, Georges Sabbagh, and other intellectual and artistic figures of the time. She enrolled at the École des Arts Décoratifs, took art history classes at the Sorbonne, and trained by copying the old masters at the Louvre. Married at the age of eighteen to the architect Eugène Beaudouin, the couple traveled the world: four years in Rome, then visits to Central and Northern Europe, Turkey, Lebanon, Greece, and Iran nourished her imagination. Returning to Paris, Joséphine Beaudouin immersed herself in a body of work where memories of her travels in the East and lessons from the great masters took shape and merged into a fantastical imagery. Imperfectly shaped marble and slate revealed a “garden” that the artist diverted, reconstructed, and magnified in the evocation of a fascinating psyche. Joséphine Beaudouin exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon des Tuileries, the Salon d’Automne, and the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs. Her works are included in the collections of the Centre Pompidou, Paris, and the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec, Albi.
