About the Item

Cool Afternoon by Texas artist Julie England is an Ink and Watercolor, Oil on Yupo paper. The size of Cool Afternoon is 11″ x 14″ Image 16″ x 21 3/4″ Framed. Art is floated in a white or neutral 1” depth gallery frame with plexi glazing. Cool Afternoon is part of the Botanical Series. Whether a mass of color blur or the focal point of a bloom like a botanical illustration, each is recording its environment and time. A meditative connection to the wild land comes with observation and ecological awareness. The Earth’s diverse surface is fascinating. The vegetative environments invite viewers to visit a place. Local light and atmosphere affect the plant life that thrives, the colors we see and experience of mood and energy. These botanical paintings explore memory and landscape with complex spatial environments that hover between painterly realism and abstract passages. Throughout the long tradition of landscape painting, there exists a connection between the artist and the natural world. A painter can evoke this relationship through the use of color, value and line whether the painting is representational or abstracted. These elements combine and intertwine to create rhythms of perspective and dimension, illuminating this personal vision on canvas. Yupo paper is waterproof, and stands up to the rigors of the elements and demanding environments. Ultra-smooth and bright white, it's a paper alternative that stands out. Bio Julie England is an oil painter working in Dallas, Texas. In 2018 she was honored with the SMU Mary Vernon Painting Prize from the Southern Methodist University Meadows Art faculty. England’s artwork was selected for the New Texas Talent XXVII in 2020 and the Texas National 2018 Art Competition & Exhibition. Her most recent solo exhibition was at Strata Gallery, Santa Fe, NM in 2022 followed by an artist residency at Vermont Studio Center in March, 2023. Julie’s paintings are represented by Jack Meier Gallery located in Houston, TX. Julie’s work combines a unique background in engineering, business leadership and visual arts. England earned a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX. After a career in the semiconductor industry, she earned an Associates of Arts degree in 2015 at Brookhaven College, Farmers Branch, Texas. In 2018 she earned a Bachelor’s of Fine Art degree from Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas. “Women belong in all places where decisions are being made” said Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Julie’s passion for blazing trails in corporate roles is why she combines business with her art practice. Taking a seat at the board table is her way of paying forward to the next generation of professional women. England is a director on two corporate boards and paints between board meetings. A daily practice in an art studio located in the Dallas Design District, she is a devoted oil painter. Going back to university for her art degree in order to launch her 20+-year commitment to painting fed her desire for oil painting. Belief in being a positive force in her community, Julie is a director on the board at ERCOT, the Electric Reliability Council Of Texas serving the State of Texas. England is a former board member with the Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas Arboretum in Dallas, TX and the board of trustees of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, NM. Julie served for numerous years on the Art For Advocacy curatorial committee; this art event raises funds for Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center.

Whether a mass of color blur or the focal point of a bloom like a botanical illustration, each is recording its environment and time. A meditative connection to the wild land comes with observation and ecological awareness. I paint natural, organic imagery with a focus on mark-making and use of material transparencies. My work includes vegetative and topological forms and gestures using color as a vehicle to convey energy from nature. I create images of imaginary environments inviting viewers to visit. Intersection 18x14, oil on panel City Scene Landscape
By Garrett Middaugh
Located in Houston, TX
Intersection 18x14, oil on panel City Scene Landscape The artist is a regional landscape painter working in oils and pastels whose subject matter varies from the mountains and desert of west Texas to the wetlands along the Texas coast, with a strong focus on Texas forests and trees. and to the Rocky Mountains The artist is in corporate and private collections around the world. Garrett Middaugh is a regional landscape painter working in oils and pastels whose subject matter varies from the mountains and desert of west Texas to the wetlands along the Texas coast, with a strong focus on Texas forests and trees. His palette is muted, stark, embracing the neutral colors of everyday experience. Avoiding the romantic, his landscapes are often painted at high noon or in the dead of winter. He paints in a fluid hyper realist style and feels most influenced by other landscape artists such as Neil Welliver and Rackstraw Downes. He sees landscape painting as a form of meditation, projecting outward, while solving equations and mapping the scene, realizing accuracy of objects and relationships, of light, color, textures, distances. "Landscape painting is for me a means of projecting outward, of meditating, examining the here and now of place. The process often feels similar to the satisfaction of solving math equations, intuitively realizing accuracy of objects and relationships, of light, color, textures, distances. For the most part I paint Texas. For several years I devoted a significant amount of time to painting its forests -- the complexity of forest alleviated my sense and the nearness and density of growth was comforting. I have also ventured into west Texas and Big Bend, and occasionally have attempted to capture the mesmerizing serenity of central Texas farm and ranchland." Garrett Middaugh Also shown is a new Texas tractor painting...

"The Red Silo" Winold Reiss, Rural Regionalist Landscape, Sunny Day on Farm
By Winold Reiss
Located in New York, NY
Winold Reiss The Red Silo Signed lower left Watercolor on paper 20 x 29 inches Winold Reiss (1886-1953) was an artist and designer who emigrated to the United States from Germany in 1913. Probably best known as a portraitist, Reiss was a pioneer of modernism and well known for his brilliant work in graphic and interior design. A compassionate man who greatly respected all people as human beings, he believed that his art could help break down racial prejudices. Like his father Fritz Reiss (1857-1915), who was also an artist and who was his son's first teacher, Winold Reiss was artistically moved by diverse cultures. The elder Reiss focused on folk life in Germany while Winold drew substantial inspiration from a range of cultures, particularly Native American, Mexican, and African-American. As did many young aspiring artists, Winold Reiss studied with the esteemed painter and teacher Franz von Stuck at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, which was at that time a center of the decorative and fine-arts movement. It is not known whether Reiss met E. Martin Hennings...

Place Pigalle
By Lucien Génin
Located in London, GB
'Place Pigalle', oil and gouache on art paper, by Lucien Génin (circa 1930s). Pigalle is well known to tourists who want to experience "Paris by night". It is home to some of Paris' most famous cabarets such as the Moulin Rouge which was immortalised by artist Toulouse-Lautrec. Lautrec's studio was here as was Picasso's, Vincent Van Gogh's and that of Andre Breton. In 1928 Josephine Baker opened her first nightclub next door to Breton's apartment. It is certainly a historical landmark of Paris and well known to so many visitors of this beautiful city. Génin painted Paris and Parisians and this is another one of his charming works among many held by this gallery. Please feel free to peruse them all on this platform. In good overall condition. Newly framed and glazed with anti-reflective glass. Upon request a video may be provided. About the Artist: After the devastation of the First World War, Lucien Génin (1894 - 1953) left his provincial home in the autumn of 1919 to find his fortune among the lively Parisians in the heart of Montmartre. Génin befriended the painters Frank Will, Gen Paul, Émile Boyer...
