Katherine Kean
Rain Dots 2, contemporary urban landscape

2018

About the Item

Drops of rain reflect bright lights and dot the stormy sky of a rainy day. The windshield highlights the contrast of an intimate experience within to the effect of the elements outside, evoking the comforting experience of chrysalism. The brushwork is both painterly and playful while striking a midpoint between pure representation and an abstracted emphasis on the picture plane. This is an original oil painting on 8 inch by 10 inch cradled gessoboard. The cradles are made with premium 13 ply birchwood, suitable for framing, or beautiful left as is. The painting is fitted with finger friendly wire and ready for installation. Kean's layered application of paint and translucent glazes allows for unexpected variations in color and tone that capture various elements from nature's creative chaos. In the process, she gives viewers an opportunity to reconnect with an essential experience of nature and look inward to the dramas of our own minds. As a painter, Katherine Kean seeks moments of breath-taking transition in nature; a gathering of clouds or changing tides; times when the elements of the landscape combine with the alchemy of imagination to illuminate the world of heightened mood and sensation. Her paintings aim to capture these fleeting moments in time and reveal the serene center that can arise in the midst of nature’s turbulence. Katherine Kean has exhibited in museums and galleries across the United States and has been acquired by many private and corporate collections. She has been honored to have her work selected for Bloomingdale's in Santa Monica, California, Schiffer's 100 Artists of the West Coast II, Paint America's Paint the Parks, Manhattan Arts Healing Arts International's Celebrate the Healing Power of Art and the National Weather Center 2015 Biennale.

  • The Orange Wall of San Miguel #2
    By Carole Garland
    Located in Palm Desert, CA
A quiet street of San Miguel de Allende in Mexico is the subject of this painting by Carole Garland. An elderly woman cautiously makes her way along a narrow path using a tree to lend support. The orange wall provides much needed shade in the afternoon heat. Light seeps through the branches of a colorful bougainvillea patterning the orange bulwark. Artist Carole Garland who studied art in both San Miguel de Allende and Mexico City shares her appreciation of the simplicity of this quiet backstreet in a Mexican town. A special moment in time is brought to life. Garland uses the scumbling technique and a paint laden palette knife to achieve texture and depth in the leaves, the branches and the rough pavement of the street. This oil on wood panel is 16"x20" and its natural wood sides serve as a frame. The painting is wired for easy hanging. This is a stand-alone artwork but was conceived as a companion piece to Orange Wall of San Miguel #1. Together they are 16"x 40". Artist Carole Garland has appeared in numerous venues throughout Southern California, including several juried California Art Club exhibits and individual shows at TAG Gallery in Los Angeles. Her work has recently appeared at the West Los Angeles College Art Gallery; the Rose Cafe, Venice; Topanga Canyon Art...
