About the Item
The artists' enclave of Sa Miguel de Allende provides inspiration at every turn. Here the Orange Wall on a back street of the town serves as a protective barrier to the sheltered homes behind it. At the same time it offers shade along with the trees which cast their shadows on the rough pavement.
Artist Carole Garland who studied art in both San Miguel de Allende and Mexico City shares her appreciation of the simplicity in this quiet bylane of a Mexican town. The sun highlights the upper leaves of the trees giving way to dark shadows below. The orange wall transitions from light to mysterious darkness. Garland uses a palette knife and stumbling to achieve the rough penumbra at the edges of the deepest shadows in the trees and rocky road.
This Oil on Wood Panel is 16'x20" and its natural wood sides serve as a frame. The painting is wired for easy hanging. This is a stand alone work but was conceived as a companion piece to Orange Wall of San Miguel #2.
Together they are 16"x 40".
Carole Garland has appeared in numerous venues throughout Southern California including several juried California Art Club shows. Garland has had several individual exhibits at TAG Gallery and recently appeared at West Los Angeles College Art Gallery; Rose Cafe, Venice; Santa Paula Art Museum; realART Gallery, Agoura Hills; Topanga Canyon Gallery, and the Channel Islands Studio Gallery.

- The Orange Wall of San Miguel #2By Carole GarlandLocated in Palm Desert, CAA quiet street of San Miguel de Allende in Mexico is the subject of this painting by Carole Garland. An elderly woman cautiously makes her way along a narrow path using a tree to lend support. The orange wall provides much needed shade in the afternoon heat. Light seeps through the branches of a colorful bougainvillea patterning the orange bulwark. Artist Carole Garland who studied art in both San Miguel de Allende and Mexico City shares her appreciation of the simplicity of this quiet backstreet in a Mexican town. A special moment in time is brought to life. Garland uses the scumbling technique and a paint laden palette knife to achieve texture and depth in the leaves, the branches and the rough pavement of the street. This oil on wood panel is 16"x20" and its natural wood sides serve as a frame. The painting is wired for easy hanging. This is a stand-alone artwork but was conceived as a companion piece to Orange Wall of San Miguel #1. Together they are 16"x 40". Artist Carole Garland has appeared in numerous venues throughout Southern California, including several juried California Art Club exhibits and individual shows at TAG Gallery in Los Angeles. - Venice BeachBy Carole GarlandLocated in Palm Desert, CADepicts Carole Garland reveling in a hot summer day at the Venice Beach. Colorful beach umbrellas shield the timid from the burning sun while sunbathers bask in the searing heat. Yellow and blue ribbons floating on the wind celebrate Venice’s chaos and its whimsy. To focus the figure of a preteen who stands sentinel, Garland fades out the foreground sunbather on right and obfuscates the crouching man on left. The artist leads us to the groups of mysterious standing and sitting figures in the shadows and beyond. Garland’s collection of figurative work speaks to a contemporary sensibility in her approach to painting, while expressing a curiosity about the human form and an irrepressible concern for the human spirit. Carole Garland graduated from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., studied at the Chicago Art Institute and the University of the Americas in Mexico City. She has worked privately with artists Keith Finch and Ron Pekar, taken numerous workshops and was mentored by David Gallup...Category
