Lambert de Hondt I (1620–1652) Scene di battaglia (2) Olio su tavola, cm 18 x 13 Firma in basso al centro Le figurette di cavalieri e soldati presenti nell'opera in esame sono pienamente ascrivibili alla produzione del pittore fiammingo Lambert de Hondt I. Tale attribuzione trova solido fondamento in confronti stilistici con opere conservate presso prestigiose istituzioni. In particolare, è possibile riscontrare affinità significative con i dipinti custoditi nello Städel Museum di Francoforte e nella Apsley House. In queste tele, si ammira una medesima trattazione del cielo, caratterizzato da una brillante tonalità di azzurro, elemento distintivo della sua tavolozza. Anche il modo in cui de Hondt I affronta le figure di soldati e cavalli è coerente con altre opere pubblicate e documentate, come quelle presenti nel portale RKD. Le informazioni biografiche su Lambert de Hondt il Vecchio sono, purtroppo, frammentarie. Si sa che era figlio di Rombout de Hondt. Una data certa è il 12 giugno 1632, giorno in cui si registra il suo matrimonio con Anna Tousijn a Mechelen (nota anche con il toponimo francese di Malines). È certo che l'artista abbia svolto la maggior parte della sua attività professionale in questa città, strategicamente posizionata tra i due importanti centri artistici di Bruxelles e Anversa, il che potrebbe aver influenzato la sua produzione e le sue relazioni artistiche. La data della sua morte è deducibile indirettamente: il 10 febbraio 1665 è la data del nuovo matrimonio della sua vedova, indicando che Lambert de Hondt I doveva essere già deceduto prima di quel giorno. Talvolta viene confuso nelle attribuzioni con un altro artista Lambert de Hondt II o il giovane, col quale sussistono evidenti differenze al punto che il primo viene chiamato il vecchio e l'altro il giovane. Tra i due sussisteva probabilmente una parentela. L'artista si inserisce con peculiarità nel panorama pittorico del suo tempo, distinguendosi per una produzione variegata che spazia dalle scene equestri e di battaglia a dipinti di genere, paesaggi e soggetti religiosi. Queste opere richiamano alla mente la maniera di David Teniers il Giovane, suggerendo un'influenza stilistica o una risonanza tematica con la pittura fiamminga a lui contemporanea. La predilezione per cavalli e scene di cavalleria è evidente, affiancata da rappresentazioni di vita paesana e scene di caccia. Come consuetudine dell'epoca, de Hondt era un artista propenso alla collaborazione, prassi che testimonia la natura interconnessa del sistema artistico del Seicento. La sua partnership con Willem van Herp è particolarmente significativa. In queste opere congiunte, si occupava della stesura del paesaggio, mentre van Herp aggiungeva le figure, come si evince da dipinti quali Noè che raduna la sua famiglia e gli animali nell'Arca, Orfeo che incanta gli animali e San Francesco con gli animali. Queste tele, caratterizzate da una composizione simile, rappresentano una variazione sul tema del cosiddetto "paesaggio paradisiaco". Questo genere, reso celebre e popolare da Jan Brueghel il Vecchio, descrive il Giardino dell'Eden così come narrato nel Libro della Genesi, popolato da una moltitudine di animali, pesci e uccelli, espressione della creazione divina. De Hondt sicuramente raggiunse alti livelli d'esecuzione al punto che le sue opere entrarono a far parte di collezioni importanti, come nel caso di Un accampamento con soldati che giocano a carte, oggi al Wellington Museum (Apsley House, Londra), il quale è stato marchiato con un giglio bianco sul retro, simbolo delle opere d'arte parte della collezione privata di Elisabetta Farnese. Spesso le sue composizioni sono, come in questo caso, accompagnate dalla firma L.D. HONDT. Il personaggio a cavallo, protagonista delle due tavolette, è stato identificato come Giovanni Maurizio di Nassau-Siegen, potente diplomatico che ricoprì nel XVII secolo la carica di governatore olandese in Brasile.
