Lazare Bruandet was an artist with a wild character and a lover of nature, which led to the saying that he was a romantic artist. He had been condemned to death for having thrown out of a window his concubine whom he suspected of infidelity! He then decided to live hidden for several years in the forest of Fontainebleau in the ruins of the old priory Notre-Dame de Franchard. It was there that he painted his paintings that a dealer was coming to buy from him!
Thanks to his Nordic training – he studied with the German painter Rœser – he had the style of the realistic and meticulous landscape painters of Northern Europe. But by working with the painters Taunay and Swebach, he gave his compositions a picturesque side. Moreover, through his practice of painting outdoors in the forests surrounding Paris, he is considered one of the precursors of Barbizon painting, along with artists such as Georges Michel and Jacques François Joseph Swebach-Desfontaines.

Oil on canvas
27 x 40 cm (45 x 58 cm with the frame)

Very nice 19th century gilded wooden frame
French painter, lithographer and illustrator, Théophile Clément Blanchard is part of of those painters of the romantic era who represented picturesque views of France like Alexis Daligé de Fontenay or Eugène Cicéri. These painters traveled a lot and sought out picturesque sites, particularly in Normandy, Brittany, Switzerland and the Pyrenees. Blanchard participated in the illustration of “Picturesque and Romantic Travels in the Old France”. But the works of this romantic painter are rare because Blanchard died very young at twenty-nine year old ! We still know of him, in particular, a view of Bugey (dated 1846) which is at the Louvre Museum and a “Delicious Landscape” (from the 1840s) at the Salies museum at Bagnères de Bigorre...

Figures and Cattle on Woodland Path - French figurative landscape oil painting
By Philippe Budelot
Located in Hagley, England
This charming French Old Master oil painting is by noted French artist Philippe Budelot. Painted circa 1800 the composition is of figures on a woodland path by a lake. In the foreground is a drover on horseback with some cattle and a goat. They are being greeted by the sheep dog of the shepherdess behind them who has sheep scattered amongst the trees. More figures are coming along the path in the distance. The group in the foreground are well illuminated beneath the blue sky above and it is probably early morning. The brushwork on the trees is superb and the whole scene is quite charming. This is an excellent example of a French Old Master landscape...

Wooded landscape of the Roman countryside with the Archangel Raphael and Tobiolo
oil painting on canvas
second half of the 17th century
(cm.) 75 x 98, with frame 91 x 115
On the back old label inscribed "Monte dei Paschi di Siena"
The painting has characters clearly linked to the Roman culture of the seventeenth century and, in particular, to the works of Gaspard Dughet, an author who was able to achieve surprising results in describing the Lazio countryside with a unique grace and sensitivity.
Brother-in-law of Nicolas Poussin, of whom he was a pupil, Dughet is to be considered among the most important landscape painters of the Roman Baroque, highly sought after and celebrated by the aristocracy, a reference model for the artists of the following generation, such as Crescenzo Onofri, Jan Frans van Bloemen and Andrea Locatelli...
