About the Item
"Scene in Mohawk Valley, Utica, NY," c. 1860 by Hudson River School painter Lemuel Maynard Wiles (American, 1826-1905) was painted during the Civil War years. Wiles's red striated clouds glow like embers against a darkening sky. The painting is oil on panel and measures 15 x 12 5/8 inches. An original label can be found on the verso. A large scale work by the artist titled, "Valley of the Genesee from Sheldon Farm, Moscow, NY" can be found in the collection of Munson, in Utica, NY.
Lemuel Maynard Wiles, the son of farmers and a native of West Perry, New York, displayed an artistic talent at an early age—mainly in the form of sketches. Encouraged by his mother, Wiles decided to pursue a career in teaching at the New York State Normal School in Albany, where he graduated in 1847. Wiles taught briefly in the district schools of Smoky Hollow and Strykersville, as well as the Lyons Union School and the Albany Academy, before opening the Select School for Boys in Buffalo in 1851. Wiles would maintain this teaching position until
1857. It was in 1849, during his early teaching years, that Wiles commenced his formal artistic education under the instruction of the Hudson River School painters William M. Hart (1823-1894) and Jasper Francis Cropsey (1823-1900).
In 1854, Wiles married Rachel Ramsay, and the two settled in the area of Utica, New York. Their son, Irving Ramsay Wiles, was born in 1861. The junior Wiles would follow in the artistic footsteps of his father, becoming a talented painter in his own right. Shortly after Irving's birth,
the family decided to move to New York City for the sake of the senior Wiles's career. He rented a studio on Astor place, and quickly gained a foothold in the New York art scene. Within a year, Wiles had exhibited his first painting at the National Academy of Design.
Throughout the 1860s and 1870s, Wiles's reputation grew steadily. He exhibited annually at the Brooklyn Art Association (1865-1881) and at the National Academy of Design (1864-1900), in addition to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Boston Art Club, and the Art Institute of Chicago. For a short time in the early 1860s, Wiles also maintained a studio in Washington, D.C., where he painted portraits of politicians.
After embarking on a painting expedition to the west coast, where he visited Yosemite Valley and Southern California (1873-1874), Wiles accepted a position as the director of the Ingham University art school in LeRoy, New York. The return to an academic schedule allowed Wiles to embark on sketching excursions in the summers, as many of his contemporaries did at this time. Wiles seems to have favored points in Long Island and Maine, and even traveled to London,
Rome, and Paris in 1883. By 1884, Wiles was awarded an honorary Master of Arts degree from Ingham University, though he resigned his position as director in 1888.
Together with his family, Wiles returned to his hometown of Perry, New York. Not long after his resignation, in the summer of 1888, Wiles opened a summer art school on Silver Lake, aptly named the “Silver Lake Art School.” For many years after, the family would spend their winters in New York City and their summers on Silver Lake—with the exception of the years 1892-1894, when Wiles traveled to Tennessee in an attempt to establish an art department for Vanderbilt University (then the University of Tennessee's Peabody College). After his wife's
death in 1896, Wiles continued to paint and spend time often with his adult children, Irving and Gladys. Despite failing health and increasing deafness, Wiles continued to paint until his death in 1905.

New England Sunrise, 1910 by Lockwood DeForest (American, 1850-1932)
Located in New York, NY
"New England Sunrise," 1910 by Hudson River School painter Lockwood DeForest (American, 1850-1932) is oil on artists card-stock and measures 9.75 x 14 inches. The work is signed by DeForest and dated Sept. 17, 1910 at lower left. The work is framed in an elegant, period appropriate frame, and ready to hang.
Lockwood de Forest was born in New York in 1850 to a prominent family. He grew up in Greenwich Village and on Long Island at the family summer estate in Cold Spring Harbor. As was customary for a cultivated family in the Gilded Age, the de Forests made frequent trips abroad. Excursions to the great museums, which were prominent on the de Forests agenda, deepened the young Lockwood's familiarity with European painting and sculpture. Though he had begun drawing and painting somewhat earlier, it was during a visit to Rome in 1868 that nineteen-year-old de Forest first began to study art seriously, taking painting lessons from the Italian landscapist Hermann David Salomon Corrodi (1844–1905). More importantly, on the same trip, Lockwood met one of America’s most celebrated painters, (and his maternal great-
uncle by marriage) Frederic Edwin Church (1826–1900), who quickly became his mentor. DeForest accompanied Church on sketching trips around Italy and continued this practice when they both returned to America in 1869. Early on in his career, de Forest made a habit of recording the date and often the place of his oil sketches, as to create a visual diary of his travels. Lockwood’s profession as a landscape painter can be primarily attributed to Frederic E. Church and his belief in the young artist’s talent.
De Forest often visited Church in the Hudson River community of Catskill where, in addition to sketching trips and afternoons of painting, he assisted with the architectural drawings and planning of Olana. In 1872, de Forest took a studio at the Tenth Street Studio Building in New York. During these formative years de Forest counted among his friend’s artists such as Sanford Robinson Gifford (1823–80), George Henry Yewell (1830–1923), John Frederick Kensett (1816–72), Jervis McEntee (1828–91), and Walter Launt Palmer (1854–1932).
Over the next decade de Forest experienced success as a painter. He exhibited for the first time at the National Academy of Design in 1872, and made two more painting trips abroad, in 1875–76 and 1877–78, traveling to the major continental capitals but also the Middle East and North Africa. His trip to the Middle East and the library at Church’s home, Olana, established his interest in design during his mid-twenties. From about 1878 to 1902, landscape painting was overshadowed by his activities and preoccupation with East Indian architecture and décor, a style that became quite fashionable in late nineteenth century America. From 1879-1883, de Forest founded Associated Artists along with Louis Comfort Tiffany, Candace Wheeler...

A painter, sculptor, writer, and teacher, John Weir was a highly talented man whose painting was overshadowed by his father, Robert Weir, the long-time West Point Academy drawing teacher, and his brother, J Alden Weir, well-known impressionist painter.
His distinguished reputation was primarily based on his accomplishments as a teacher and administrator. For many years, from 1869 to 1913, John Weir was the Director of the Yale University School of Fine Arts. He was also a commissioner of the art exhibition at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia.
Weir was born at West Point, New York, and by age 20, had a studio in New York City in the Tenth Street Studio Building, the first building in America dedicated to art studios, and there he associated with many leading painters of the day.
He earned attention early in his career for paintings of industrial scenes...
