About the Item
"Avon River", a beautiful mid century figurative landscape of Christ Church, New Zealand by Leon Worley (American, 1909-2003). Presented in a wooden frame. Signed "Leon Worley" lower left. Titled "Avon River, Christ Church New Zealand" and signed "Leon Worley" on verso. Framed: 25.75"H x 31.5"W. Image: 18"H x 24"W.
Born and raised near Warren, Ohio, he earned a BA in Architecture from Carnegie Tech and a BA from Hiram College. In World War II he attained the rank of Major in the Corps of Engineers, U.S. Army and was aide to General Ulysses S. Grant III. Mr. Worley was founder and partner of Seibert, Worley, Cady, Kirk Architects in Cleveland, Ohio that specialized in commercial, industrial and institutional work. He was president of The Cleveland Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and the Architects Society of Ohio. In Cleveland Mr. Worley was a member of The City Club, The Country Club and the Downtown Kiwanis Club. He is listed in Who's Who in the Midwest. In Winter Park he was a member of the University Club; the Winter Park Racquet Club, the Stag Club, and enjoyed playing golf daily with his friends at the city course in Winter Park. An avid golfer, he also enjoyed two holes-in-one. Mr. Worley was a talented photographer and artist who enjoyed painting paintings of his extensive travels.
