About the Item

It is a wonderful panoramic view of a French town and surrounding landscape by Richmond, who painted many views around Les Andeleys in France and dates to circa 1940. Beautiful colouring and light in a fine impressionist palette. Provenance. Purchased direct form the artist at his St Ives studio. Condition. Oil on canvas. Image size 32 inches by 24 inches in good original condition. Housed in a fine gallery frame 38 by 30 inches. Excellent condition. Leonard Richmond (1889-1965) was born in Somerset and studied at Taunton and Chelsea Polytechnic. In WWI he was the Canadian Government war artist and in 1925 was commissioned to promote rail and hotel facilities through poster art in western Canada, by the Canadian Pacific Railway. His large colourful posters advertising the region and the Canadian Rockies were much admired, and he worked for the English railways as well. During the 1930s he visited St Ives regularly, taking a studio there in 1932, setting up a summer painting school in 1935. He lived successively in Brentford (1912), Southall (1914), London (1919), and was giving his address in Guildford in 1935. Leonard Richmond is one of the many artists who began work in West Cornwall at an earlier date, moved away and then returned to Cornwall at a later date, in his case, for three years from 1946 to 49. He was a prolific exhibitor at Fine Art Society, RA, Cooling and Walker's Galleries and also showed widely overseas winning a number of awards. These included the Tuthill Prize at Chicago International Watercolour Exhibition in 1928 and in 1947 silver medal at Paris Salon. Member of PS, RBA, RI and ROI.

Jules Van Biesbroeck was the son of Jules Evariste van Biesbroeck, a painter of Ghent, but was born in Italy, in Portici, near Naples, while his parents were staying there. (In the 19th century many artists made educational trips to Italy). It was a long visit: the child was two years old by the time the family returned to Ghent.[1] After a short period of practice with his father, van Biesbroeck was enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. His first painting, "The Shepherd" (French: Le pâtre), was sold at the Triennale in Ghent. In 1888, when he was only 15 years old, he made his debut at the "Salon des Champs-Elysées" in Paris with his monumental work "The Launch of the Argo" (French: Le lancement...

In this prototypical oil painting, Walter Launt Palmer's title as "the painter of the American winter" can be vividly and brilliantly seen. As an impressionist painter that emerged at the turn of the 20th century, Palmer took great interest in the picturesque American landscape, though he particularly focused on the rendering of this landscape glistening with snow. His pictures evoke an unreplicable natural serenity, and in this oil painting "The Winter Scene...
