About the Item

Cuban-born, Houston-bred Lilian Garcia-Roig describes her mode of painting as Maximalism. Utilizing the plein-air technique of working on-site, her work differs from traditional landscape painting in that she captures not a moment in time, but a period of time - creating a density and richness specific to her work. As Richard Shiff writes in his essay for the Polk Museum of Art exhibition catalogue, “Her art is less about fixing the image of a moment, more about participating in the moment, which heightens the artist’s sensitivity to her existence within nature’s community.” Lilian Garcia-Roig’s paintings boldly challenge the cliché that less is more. According to Garcia-Roig, more is more. This notion can be explained by her definition of Maximalism: the capacity of a painting to be multidimensional on numerous levels. Garcia-Roig states, “It is my hope that the viewer comes away believing that more information, more square footage, more complexity, more layers, more abstraction, more representation, more paint, more everything in even a single painting, can add up to a more powerful and rewarding visual experience.” Lilian Garcia-Roig was born in Havana, Cuba, reared in Houston, and lives in Tallahassee, Florida, where she is a Professor at Florida State University. She received degrees at Southern Methodist University (BFA) and the University of Pennsylvania (MFA) and taught for nine years at The University of Texas at Austin. Among her awards are a Joan Mitchell Foundation Award, a Mid-America Arts Alliance/NEA Fellowship Award in Painting, and a State of Florida Individual Artist Grant Fellowship. Museum collections include the Austin Museum of Art, Blanton Museum of Art, El Paso Museum of Art, Huntsville Museum of Art, Museum of South Texas, Polk Museum of Art, San Angelo Museum of Art, among many others.

Water Leaves
By Malou Flato
Located in Dallas, TX
Over the past forty years, Malou Flato’s paintings have focused on the Texas landscape—its native flowers, blooming cactus, diverse citizenry, and especially its precious water and abundant sky. Flato has a studio in Austin and another on her great-grandfather’s ranch on the southwestern shoulder of the Hill Country, in Edwards County. “Texas is my inspiration,” she says. “I have made my life here, and I would like to think that my art reflects the place I know best.” Malou Flato’s works can be seen in many public places in Texas and beyond. They enliven a border crossing...
