A large format panel exudes a dark and moody composition of a nearly abstract landscape. Bold orange, red, and a muddy yellow emerge from deep blue and brown surroundings, almost glowing like a campfire in the woods. Bright pink and purple bits of the underpainting peak through giving the work a lovely contrast of light and dark. The impression of foliage and tree trunks are silhouetted against this obscured lightsource, creating depth and complexity within this oil painting by artist Lindsay Mueller.
Artist Commentary:
This piece was a second large-scale work in my endeavor to paint dark scenes at night. I would turn off almost all of the lights in my studio as I tried to capture the color of incandescent and fluorescent lights that shone through the trees. Painting in this manner was at times creepy, and I remember jumping at least a few times as the radiator turned on, its rattling breaking through my concentration. Despite this, most of the time spent in this pursuit was actually rather peaceful, lacking interruptions or busyness. There is a slowness to painting at night that I really enjoy, and the more time you spend looking, the more you're able to see.
About the Artist:
Lindsay Mueller is an artist based in Alexandria, Virginia, who works primarily in oil painting. In her paintings, Lindsay seeks to explore connection through landscape, investigating intimate and often fleeting scenes that she observes. She is interested in the shifting colors that appear in certain circumstances of light and enjoys revealing these to the viewer. Lindsay typically paints from observation, often peering out a window or painting outside. She is an alumna of the School of Visual Arts at Boston University where she studied painting. Originally from Pennsylvania, she currently resides in Alexandria, Virginia. Lindsay values using painting to explore the place that she calls home, and she looks forward to spending more time connecting to her current home through making.

- Condition:The work suffered a few spots of mildew from being in storage. It has since been cleaned, and all of the mildew is dead and gone. However, it did cause a couple of small spots on the front to be slightly discolored, now more matte.
