Description of the work
In this oil painting, Lluís Puig Barella depicts with Mediterranean sensitivity a Catalan farmhouse framed by golden and reddish fields, beneath a luminous sky and sheltered by tall trees. The brushwork, dense and vibrant, creates textures in the wheat fields and lends the scene a tactile relief that enhances the light.
The work combines a structured drawing with a warm and contrasting color palette, achieving a balance between the classical serenity of Noucentisme and the freshness of Post-Impressionism. The composition conveys a sense of permanence and harmony—central values in mid-20th-century Catalan painting.
Artist’s biography
Lluís Puig Barella (Barcelona, 1894 – 1984) was a painter and draftsman trained at the School of Fine Arts of La Llotja and at Francesc Galí’s School, where he encountered figures of the Catalan avant-garde. In 1912, he joined the Escola de Bells Oficis, founded by Joaquim Torres García, of whom he was a disciple and collaborator.
His style, influenced by Noucentisme and by the Italian Renaissance masters (Masaccio, Giotto, Botticelli), evolved into a personal language in which the Mediterranean landscape and traditional scenes occupy a central place. An admirer of Modigliani, he managed to integrate modern echoes without abandoning classical roots.
He participated in the artistic groups of Sarrià and the Cercle Maillol, and worked as a teacher of drawing and color, contributing to the training of new generations of artists. His work is found in both private and public collections, valued for its synthesis of tradition, formal balance, and Mediterranean lyricism.
