Louis Cabié, a renowned artist in France, particularly in the Bordeaux region, even during his lifetime, traveled throughout the great southwest of France throughout his life. A student of Harpignies, whose passion for vegetation is evident in the style of the Barbizon School, he transcribed the simplicity of picturesque French landscapes until his death. Spectacular trees, forest atmospheres, places steeped in history, captivating valleys, or even a landscape in its simplest form that he enhanced with a vital contrast.
At the beginning of his career, when the painter was still an amateur, the moors surrounding Bordeaux to the west served as a playground and testing ground. It was most likely around 1885, judging by the technique and signature style, that Louis Cabié depicted this place, which he situates in other paintings in Pessac. The central oak tree is the main element, in both winter and summer, in this landscape that today boasts a few stretches of asphalt and industrial buildings.
This is a testament to the rurality of the Landes, with the shepherd tending his sheep in a landscape of oaks, gorse, and, of course, pines. All this under a sky emerging from a few storm clouds gives a formidable presence and depth to this large composition.
Presented in a light wood American box, giving a modern look to the whole.

French painter, lithographer and illustrator, Théophile Clément Blanchard is part of of those painters of the romantic era who represented picturesque views of France like Alexis Daligé de Fontenay or Eugène Cicéri. These painters traveled a lot and sought out picturesque sites, particularly in Normandy, Brittany, Switzerland and the Pyrenees. Blanchard participated in the illustration of “Picturesque and Romantic Travels in the Old France”. But the works of this romantic painter are rare because Blanchard died very young at twenty-nine year old ! We still know of him, in particular, a view of Bugey (dated 1846) which is at the Louvre Museum and a “Delicious Landscape” (from the 1840s) at the Salies museum at Bagnères de Bigorre...
