About the Item
Lowell Nesbitt's paintings can be found in most major museum collections.
In addition to his financial and critical success of the 1960s which included many important museum exhibitions and commissions, it was the late 1960s and onward that brought Nesbitt’s career to the next level. He is most associated with the photorealist art movement of the 1970's. With America in the race to be the first to visit the Moon, NASA commissioned Nesbitt to create paintings of the moon based on 2 Apollo moon missions. This is one of those rare paintings.
This Large oil on Canvas commissioned by NASA to commemorate the Space program and the Moon missions was painted in 54 years ago in 1970. Canvas size is a large 77"x77", it is framed by Nesbitt with a simple artist strip frame. The Horizontal Latitude lines in the painting give this 54 year old painting a Contemporary Pop Art feel.
In 1962 Nesbitt created his first large scale, realist, flower painting at the suggestion of friend and founding Pop artist, Robert Indiana and that began Nesbitt's journey to become one of America’s most financially and critically successful artists.
Throughout the 1960’s Nesbitt explored a wide range of subjects for his paintings including flowers, landscapes and architecture, but his Large original Moon Paintings commissioned by NASA are the most sought after and rare.
The back of the canvas is covered with an acid free foam core board to protect the canvas. The 3 screws on the top left of the acid free foam core board can be removed to show the full signature title and date if desired. I also included an image of the full signature.

Lowell Nesbitt
Lowell Nesbitt was one of the most celebrated and noted artists for his floral works of art. An artist with a highly personal style, he made realistic studies of many themes throughout his career. His most well-known series, and perhaps his most beautiful and poetic, are the more than four hundred works he created using the flower as a theme. Beginning with his first show in 1957, Nesbitt had more than 80 one-man shows. His painting, drawings and prints are included in the collections of many prestigious museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Art in New York and the National Gallery of Fine Art in Washington, D.C.

James Havard is considered one of the "pioneers of the abstract illusionism movement" One of James Havard's homes and studio's was on the island of Tortola and this work from 1979 evokes the feel of the aqua blue waters and the reference of Salt Island in the painting refers to the salty feel of the ocean waters.
In the 1970's Havard was the principle artist that started working in an abstract style that included gestural brush strokes and paint squeezed directly from the tube to create beautiful surface textures in his paintings. He then painted shadows to certain areas of paint to create the 3d illusion of depth to his paintings. This created the "Abstract Illusion" movement of the 1970's.
