About the Item

Lucien-Victor Guirand de Scévola ( 1871 – 1950) A Seascape with bathers signed upper left Oil on paper transeferred on canvas 18 x 29.5 cm In good condition a very slight indentation is perceptible in the centre between the two silhouettes of the bathers, probably original Framed : 27 x 38 cm Lucien-Victor Guirand de Scévola had a special talent for reinventing himself time and time again. This is what makes him so endearing. While his early Symbolist works are the most sought-after and expensive, he came into his own after the First World War as a portrait and still life painter, among other subjects. His inimitable style is closely linked to his particular talent for pastel art, which is particularly light and soft. However, he was also able and willing to explore other avenues in a very different style. This seascape with bathers belongs to a series of small works in which Guirand de Scévola took an original approach compared to the rest of his oeuvre. The subject remains figurative, but the execution explores a modernity that tends towards abstraction. There is a clear Fauvist influence in this work, evident in both the colours and the very free execution. This piece is particularly interesting because, while it stands out in terms of style and subject matter within Guirand's oeuvre, it is also very characteristic of the artist when we examine his painting style and composition closely. Finally, it bears witness to the artist's freedom. Lucien-Victor Guirand de Scévola ( 1871 – 1950) was a French painter. He was student of Fernand Cormon and Pierre Dupuis at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris. De Scévola art is remarkable for his silky, velvety and smooth style. The very first part of his career was marked by symbolism, but he later developped his own language, his Art Deco like bunches of flowers are the best known. He was also a great portraitist for the socialites and aristocrats of the period. He was involved in several important art movements during his lifetime, and his style evolved to reflect the changing trends in French art during the first half of the 20th century. His work is often described as a fusion of Symbolism, Post-Impressionism, and elements of modernism, though he remained deeply rooted in traditional French artistic practices. He is also known for his pioneering leadership of the Camoufleurs (the French Camouflage Department) in World War I.
