About the Item

Shown here is a council of war onboard the flagship of the Dutch fleet, "The Seven Provinces" - also the flagship of admiral Michiel Adriaensz de Ruyter. Admiral de Ruyter has raised a white flag on his flagship (the ship on the right, seen from behind), a sign that he is calling all admirals for a war council onboard his ship. The small boats surrounding "The Seven Provinces" are carrying the Dutch admirals. Several ships on the drawing have a pennant (a long narrow flag), these ships are flagships of an admiral. This war council was held on June 10, 1666, the day before the Four Days' Battle (June 11– 14, 1666). This sea battle is one of the longest naval engagements in history involving about 200 ships in total. Although the battle didn't have a clear victor, the Dutch inflicted significant damage on the English fleet, so the battle is regarded as a tactical and strategic victory for the Dutch. The most famous admiral in Dutch history, Michiel de Ruyter, enjoyed an international reputation and received numerous honors from other countries. De Ruyter was born in Flushing port in 1607, and first went to sea when he was only eleven years old. His navigating skills brought him rapid advancement. De Ruyter was employed by the Admiralty, in Zeeland in 1652 and in Amsterdam a year later. As vice-admiral of the fleet he took part in the numerous sea battles the Dutch fought against England. In 1665 he was appointed commander-in-chief of the Dutch fleet. He won several victories, but the pinnacle of his career was undoubtedly the Third Anglo-Dutch War (1672-1674), in which his superior tactics enabled him to keep a large Anglo-French fleet away from the Dutch coast. De Ruyter was killed at Syracuse in 1676 and was buried in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam. This painting is inspired by a magnificent drawing made by the artist, Willem van de Velde the Elder, who sailed with the Dutch fleet. This drawing was made by him on the spot. The work is part of the Rijksmuseum collection in Amsterdam.
