About the Item

Series Layers of Reality: After working with the first the monk series, I was ready to explore possible realities the tissue paper-cold wax technique to invite new perceptions by layering and cutting way of materials. Six large format pieces emerged: Pogonip Diptych, Mendicant Monk/Warrior Woman, Kokopelli, Fox with Bees, Peonies, and Fox/Dragonfly beginning with acrylic paintings on canvas. In some of the paintings, like a Mendicant Monk/Woman Warrior, it was the material that allowed the two different realities to be perceived. In others like Pogonip Diptych, it was the possible other reality that was developed by the materials. Each painting needed a sense of layering with the tissue and cold wax provided. There are many overlapping histories in the local terrain of Pogonip, a word borrowed from the Shoshone language. The land still houses one of the first women’s polo club and remnants of a huge lime industry. The emerging reality of this painting is Japanese Shinto symbols and petroglyphic signs of purification to heal the land.
