Died 4 November 1838 in Caen Genre scenes, interiors, Church interiors, lively landscapes, winter landscapes, seascapes, village views. Malbranche was the student of Prévost and Pierre Nolasque-Bergeret. He featured at the Paris salon in 1812 and regularly from 1819 to 1838. He exhibited at the Luxembourg Palace in 1830. He won a second class gold medal in 1831 with « Frozen river with skaters at Sunset ». The museum of fine arts in Caen held a rétrospective exhibition of his work in 2001. Malbranche began his career as a painter of genre scenes. He was influenced by the troubadour movement in early 19th century art and by religious revival of christianity. From 1820, he specialized in the autumn and winter landscapes and impressions of snow that were extremely successful. Influenced by the dutch and flemish landscape masters, his work still retains a hint of the picturesque quality of the 18th century, while expressing a romantic sensibility in a measured way. He painted many scenes from the Auge valley as well as scenes from the Alps and the Vosges.
