Emmanuel Katz - known as Mané-Katz, whose father had a job in a synagogue, was originally intended for training as a rabbi. After a brief time at the schools of fine arts in Mirgorod and Kiev, he arrived in Paris in 1913, where he enrolled in the studio of Fernand Cormon at the École des Beaux-Arts. He struck up friendships with Chaïm Soutine and Marc Chagall. After World War I broke out, he returned to Russia and worked in the entourage of the company of Russian ballets. During the Russian Revolution, he was employed as a teacher in his home town.
In 1921, Mané-Katz moved permanently to Paris where, in the former studios of William Bouguereau and then of Othon Friesz, he lived amongst a notable group of producers of popular Jewish art, reflecting his own ethnic consciousness.
In 1929, he travelled to Palestine in pursuit of his vision of the lives and the spirituality of the Jewish people. During War World II, he was able to reach the USA, where he met Kisling. He returned to Paris after France's liberation from the German Occupation and worked feverishly to make up for lost time. He later returned to Israel, where he died.
Mané-Katz spent his childhood in the shelter of the synagogue, and the Jewish religion remained a deep influence, inspiring both his style and the subject-matter of his compositions. During his early years in Paris as a pupil at the École des Beaux-Arts, he discovered Rembrandt, who never ceased to haunt him spiritually; from a technical point of view, however, he would continue to look to Gauguin, Cézanne, and the Fauvists. He built up a palette of warm and gilded hues that, in the opposite way to Soutine, conferred a celebratory character on his sinuous, tormented drawings, which however link him to the Jewish Expressionism of Central Europe. With a constantly renewed sense of joy, he painted rabbis, the interiors of synagogues, Jewish weddings, Jewish musicians, landscapes, still-lifes and flowers. He also illustrated traditional Jewish scenes ( Wailing Wall, 1938); scenes from the Old Testament ( Sacrifice of Abraham, 1944); and the recent history of the Jewish people ( Resistance of the Ghetto, 1946).
Mané-Katz exhibited in the main annual Paris salons from 1921. His work was included in several collective exhibitions, such as Russian Paris 1910-1960, a showcase for Russian art and artists in Paris organised by the Russian museum in St Petersburg, which was also seen at the Von der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux. He showed collections of his paintings in solo exhibitions, amongst others at Tel-Aviv museum in 1948. Several retrospective exhibitions were devoted to him, including: 1969, Geneva; and 1992, Galerie Katia Granoff, Paris. In 1951 he was decorated with the Légion d'Honneur.

Mane Katz
Emmanuel Mané-Katz was a prominent modernist in Paris at the beginning of the twentieth century. He studied at the Beaux Arts Academy in Kyiv, Ukraine. After his extensive travels through Europe (catalyzed by World War I), Mané-Katz eventually settled in Paris, where he befriended Pablo Picasso and other fellow modernists. Many of Mané-Katz’s paintings have deep religious significance and origins, often picturing rabbis, Jewish students, and other Hassidic personas. Such paintings of Jewish folklore are often compared to Marc Chagall’s religiously-influenced art practice. He continued his travels to places like Israel, Palestine, Brazil, and Japan throughout the rest of his life, maintaining adherence to religious themes and portraiture in his art. The Mané-Katz Museum is located on Mt. Carmel in Haifa, Israel, and his work is part of the permanent collections of the Tate, the MOMA, and the Museum of Art at Ein Harod in Israel. After his death, Mané-Katz donated much of his art to Haifa, Israel, where his home was. His participation in the School of Paris alongside modernists like Picasso, Chagall, and Soutine solidified him as an influential modernist painter in the early twentieth century.

"Landscape of a Village Near Mountains" Expressionistic Oil Painting on Masonite
By Michael Baxte
Located in New York, NY
A strong modernist oil painting depicted in 1969 by Russian painter Michael Baxte. Mostly known for his abstracted figures on canvas or street scenes, this piece is a wonderful representation of his bold still life paintings, with expressive use of color, shape, and form. Later in his career, Baxte explores Expressionism, infusing both European and North American stylistic trends. This piece is from later in his career, but we can feel this underlying style throughout.
Art measures 18 x 21.75 inches
Michael Posner Baxte was born in 1890 in the small town of Staroselje Belarus, Russia. For the first half of the 19th century it was a center of the Chabad movement of Hasidic Jews, but this group was gone by the middle of the 19th century. By the time the Baxte family immigrated to the United States at the beginning of the 20th century, the Jewish population numbered only on the hundreds. The native language of the Baxte family was Yiddish. It is likely that the death of Michael Baxte’s father triggered the family’s immigration. Three older brothers arrived in New York between 1903 and 1905. Michael and his mother, Rebecca, arrived in 1907. By 1910 Michael, his mother, and brother, Joseph, were living in New Orleans and may have spent some time on a Louisiana plantation. Around 1912, Michael Baxte returned to Europe to study the violin. In 1914 he, his mother, and Joseph moved to New York City.
Meanwhile, in Algeria, a talented young woman painter, Violette Mege, was making history. Since for the first time, a woman won the prestigious Beaux Art competition in Algeria. At first, the awards committee denied her the prize but, with French government intervention, Mege eventually prevailed. She won again 3 years later and, in 1916, used the scholarship to visit the United States of America. When Violette came to New York, she met Baxte, who was, by then, an accomplished violinist, teacher, and composer. Baxte’s compositions were performed at the Tokyo Imperial Theater, and in 1922 he was listed in the American Jewish Yearbook as one of the prominent members of the American Jewish community. As a music teacher he encouraged individual expression. Baxte stated, “No pupil should ever be forced into imitation of the teacher. Art is a personal experience, and the teacher’s truest aim must be to awaken this light of personality through the patient light of science.”
By 1920 Michael Baxte and Violette Mege were living together in Manhattan. Although they claimed to be living as husband and wife, it seems that their marriage did not become official until 1928. On their “unofficial” honeymoon around 1917, in Algiers, Baxte confided to her his ambition to paint. There and later in New Mexico where the wonderful steeped sunlight approximates the coloring of Algiers, she taught him his heart’s desire. He never had any other teacher. She never had any other pupil. For ten years she devoted all her time, energy, and ambition to teaching, encouraging, inspiring him. Then in 1928, their mutual strivings were rewarded, as his works were being chosen as one of the two winners in the Dudensing National Competition for American Painters. Out of 150 artists from across the country participated in the Dudensing, and Michael Posner Baxte and, Robert Fawcett, were the winners.
In his 1924 naturalization application, he indicated that he was sometimes known as “Michael Posner Baxte.” One of the witnesses to his application was Bernard Karfiol, a Jewish American artist. That’s when Michael may...
