Allison Gildersleeve
How Does Your Garden Grow

2016

About the Item

Allison Gildersleeve addresses the theme of memory, exploring the phenomenon of past and present becoming collapsed or entwined by the emotional experience. Gildersleeve states: “In these works, I apply paint to describe a form but also allow the paint strokes to become forms in themselves: maybe it’s an animal head, a person’s shadow, a finger or a foot. Figuration and abstraction coexist in a state of divided attention, just as the mind can focus on the task at hand while replaying a past experience. The background becomes part of the foreground, eliminating the middle ground, just as distant events can infiltrate the present to the point of distortion.” Allison Gildersleeve was born in Connecticut, earned her B.A. from the College of William and Mary and her M.F.A. from Bard College. Gildersleeve lives and works in Brooklyn, New York; she was awarded the New York Foundation of the Arts Fellowship in Painting in 2008. Gildersleeve has had solo exhibitions in New York City, Denver, and Stockholm. Valley House Gallery presented Allison Gildersleeve’s first exhibition in Texas, “Allison Gildersleeve: Closer Than They Appear,” in 2015. A 3-part video interview with Gildersleeve can be found on the Valley House Gallery YouTube channel.
