Daniel Sherrin
Landscape at sunset

early 20th century

About the Item

19th century Landscape of lake and mountains with figures, this fine, large, vintage oil painting on canvas is by British artist Daniel Sherrin. Signed D. Sherrin on lower left. Sherrin's work appears in Museum and Gallery collections in the UK. Son of an artist, Sherrin also studied under Benjamin Leader, developing a gift for fine detail. Early in his career Sherrin painted realistic detailed maritime and seascape themes, but later turned to impressionist landscapes. He is best known for his landscape paintings of the British countryside and Scottish Highlands. Here is a painting of a fleeting moment in time, with impressions of figures, shadows and sunlit spaces. The overall affect of this work is achieved with short brush strokes, atmospheric light and color. The setting sun shines on the back of the hills in this richly colored work. The foreground contrasts with glowing hills, using earthy tones and softer light on the lake. This painting is one of his more impressive ones presented in excellent condition. Extending 35" High and 55" Wide with the frame, this painting is four and a half feet in length. Sherrin is a renowned landscape and Highland artist, and this is one of his larger, more colorful and detailed work, in the style for which he is best known. Very good overall condition with no restoration required. Ready to hang on your wall.

  • Kirkton Bridge, Balquhidder
    By JD Henderson
    Located in Hillsborough, NC
Impressionist/Post impressionist style painting 'Kirkton Bridge, Balquhidder' by Scottish contemporary artist JD Henderson, is a Monet-like image of a Scottish bridge in Balquhidder, the Clan homeland of McLaren in central Scotland. Dated 1995 (verso) and signed by the artist in the lower right corner, the painting is on canvas with oil paint in a new gold frame. JD Henderson is described as a 20th century Scottish Colourist and a landscape artist, using impressionism and post impressionism styles. 'Kirkton Bridge' demonstrates the Colourist trend, but also broader brushstrokes and thick applications of paint from post impressionism that gives the subject matter priority over fleeting naturalistic color and light. The actual bridge and water...

Landscape painting of The Trossachs, Scottish Highlands, 20th century is after renowned landscape artist Alfred De Breanski, Jnr, (1877-1955). As in this painting, De Breanski established a reputation for his distinctive vivid greens and color in impressionistic style within realism of his subject. This mountain scene with lake and watering cattle demonstrates the oeuvre of this artist, and also his father Alfred de Breanski Sr. This is a particularly beautiful landscape painting of Scotland, in a favorite natural region by Perthshire. 'The Trossachs' shows fine brushstrokes in the clouds, and area of raised paint over the ground. Light is captured on misty hillsides, and reflected in the water. De Breanski studied at St Martins School of Art, England, but had the benefit of his father, his mother and his Uncle who were all successful artists of their time, and their work continues to be highly sought after for the detail and light captured in plein art...
