Maria Poroy’s "Tiny Houses on the Hillside" offers a vibrant, landscape where color and form take precedence over realistic representation. The piece showcases an array of geometric homes, stacked on a rolling hillside. Using bold hues like deep purples, greens, oranges, and blues, Poroy’s distinctive palette energizes the canvas, making each house feel alive and full of personality. The colors are thick and textured, applied with strong brushstrokes, giving the work a tactile, almost sculptural feel.
The houses are simplified to their most essential forms—triangular roofs and rectangular bodies—creating a playful rhythm across the composition. The hillside they inhabit is softly indicated, and while the scene may evoke a sense of clustered community, it also conveys a dreamlike quality. The cool sky above contrasts with the warm, earthy tones of the homes, emphasizing the interplay between nature and human habitation.
About the Artist:
Maria Poroy is an acclaimed Expressionist whose art opens new perspectives and evokes cherished memories. Her work transforms tangible subjects into vivid expressions where color is the primary language, influenced by her travels and life in picturesque California.
Poroy's art captures the essence of resonant subjects, from rustic barns to delicate flowers, using acrylics and mixed media to explore texture and form. Her approach is spontaneous, employing brushes, her hands, and unconventional tools to manipulate layers quickly and achieve the desired effects. Despite being recognized early in her teens, Poroy pursued an MBA and a corporate career before a life-altering accident refocused her on art. Today, her work is featured in private and corporate collections in the US and internationally. Maria continually draws inspiration from past masters and her contemporaries, enriching her vibrant, textured compositions.

Poroy's art captures the essence of resonant subjects, from rustic barns to delicate flowers, using acrylics and mixed media to explore texture and form. Despite early recognition in her teens, Poroy pursued an MBA and a corporate career before a life-altering accident refocused her on art. Today, her work is featured in private and corporate collections both in the US and internationally. Maria continually draws inspiration from past masters and her contemporaries, enriching her vibrant, textured compositions. "I have traveled the world and live in beautiful California but have also been inspired by poetry and the patterns and textures found in old buildings. Sometimes I dream a painting before I paint it, Sometimes I have a concept but the painting takes over and goes somewhere else. I am inspired by the masters of the past and so many brilliant living artists I have been honored to learn from." "Often asked to demo, people are intrigued by the colors and textures in my work. I prefer acrylic and mixed media because many layers dry quickly and I can manipulate the paint with brushes, my hands, and a collection of unusual tools. I love the spontaneity of large brushes and dripping paint. I enjoy experiments with the media and often incorporate several in a painting. For me, it's not about the media so much as getting the effect I want."
