Archival Paper Landscape Paintings

"August Wildflowers II" is a colorful naturalist landscape featuring hues of purple, pink, orange, blue and green. This work is framed in a simple white frame behind Museum Glass measuring 60 by 41 inches. Carlyle is inspired by the works of Claude Monet, Edouard Vuillard, Henri Matisse, Walter Inglis Anderson, Charles Burchfield, Ellsworth Kelly, Alexander Calder and Mary Delany. This piece is part of a collaborative series by Carlyle and her husband Thad Lee. This body of work was made in tandem, through painting and photography, that explores their mutual delight in the natural world and within their own marriage. Carlyle Wolfe’s paintings & works on paper are about an awareness of the natural world—becoming progressively, cyclically more present to its rhythms, gaining deeper understanding of its design, & acquiring direct experiential knowledge of its mysterious beauty. For the last 15 years, Wolfe has been making contour line drawings of plants form observation. From her drawings, she isolates silhouettes into paper stencils which she uses to create oil paintings & works on paper – or cut out of metal to make sculptures. Her work is cumulative in nature – gradually marking time & seasonal change, unity & variety, individual & collective beauty. Wolfe grew up in Canton, Mississippi, & earned a BFA in painting from the University of Mississippi & an MFA in painting & drawing from Louisiana State University. In this series, the artist takes Inspiration from ancient Italian frescos originally found at the Villa di Livia outside of Rome. The frescos are from the subterranean room used for dining. The lush gardens gave the dinner guests the illusion of dining alfresco. This exploration of the past and its connection to the present is a central theme running through Pylant's work. VFD #3 is an industrial watercolor painting on paper by California artist, Ferdinanda Florence. It is 11.25 x 7, unframed. It is based on the building in Vallejo California where the fire department conducts training. Ferdinanda Florence was born in Washington, DC, and grew up in Arlington, VA. She received a degree in art history and studio art at The American University in 1994, and has continued to pursue a successful professional life as a scholar, teacher, and practicing artist. She earned her Master’s degree in art history at the University of Maryland, College Park, in 1998. A second-generation Armenian-America, Ferdinanda has explored in her research the role of place in artistic expression. Her Master’s thesis detailed the link between Armenian religious rituals and church architecture. In her travel to sites in France, Italy, and Germany, she has researched the symbolism of doorway and floor decoration in Romanesque buildings. In her artwork, she uses industrial sites in her home city of Vallejo to explore issues of place on a more personal level. Ferdinanda’s exhibitions reflect her varied interests and concerns. Passionate about political and social issues, she often touches these subjects in her art. Salska's paintings remarkable achievement is the creation of a sustained emotional effect despite multiple narrative tensions. There is a sense of quiet power, of emergence and beginnings, of wisdom against an anticipated struggle. Sometimes she uses pseudonym “Uba Owl” in her practice. Joanna Salska as Uba Owl has created a foundation of a new artistic direction which she calls "Alterrealism.” It is an interdisciplinary movement connecting arts and sciences.
