Don Pollack BIOGRAPHY Don Pollack is a Painter and Adjunct Associate Professor of Visual Communication at theSchool of t he Art Institute of Chicago. His work investigates among other things, the relationship between personal mythologies and representation in painting and how it may simultaneously give reference to a narrative.Working in cross disciplines has influenced his perspectives as projects begin with an epic adventure. Conceptually proceeding from the premise that all vision is historic and constructed, Pollack’s research starts with the planning of a long distance trek,– such as a 3000 mile journey via bicycle following Lewis and Clark. His work has utilized maps, documents, photography, painting, and installation.This work was routed in a previous investigation into the role of museums in the process of forming collective memory. Don studied design at the University of Illinois and painting at the Ohio State University where he received his MFA.The state of Illinois has recognized his history based work with a special bicentennial edition of the ‘Order of Abraham Lincoln’ award. Joseph Orr (Japanese, American, b. 1949) Lake Visitors Signed Lower Left 30 x 40 inches 35.5 x 45.5 inches with frame Born in Tokyo, Japan, Oct 31, 1949, Joseph lived his first years in an orphanage sponsored by American Armed Forces. He was adopted April,1954 and came to the US at age 5 where he became an American citizen. As the Orr’s traveled for the US military Joseph enjoyed a childhood rich in experiences from Germany and back to California where he attended High School and started College. Following his parents to Missouri In 1971 he took a job with Hallmark Cards as machine operator in the cardboard fold dept. It sparked an interest in art, so after a few months he sought out some of the Hallmark artists at their work for private lessons. He learned basic drawing and watercolor from Anthony Allison and, “Probably before I was ready”, he admits, Joseph was entering local art shows and even winning prizes. At that time Joseph also enrolled for art instruction under John Coleman at Longview Community College. He spent one semester there. By the end of 1972 Joseph had quit his day job to become a full time painter, joining an art show tour group called Word Of Art, which was a new concept: culture meets promotion. Booking weekly art exhibits in the new indoor shopping malls across America, The idea transformed part of the art world by bringing art to the masses. For Joe and many other artists in the early 1970’s, it created the chance to paint full time and sell their work to an otherwise unobtainable audience. During this time of continuous self study and painting Joseph transitioned from watercolor to the newer acrylic painting medium. Believing that acrylic, as a fine art painting medium, can be as viable as oil, Orr has always promoted it as the modern medium that it is. In 1990 Joseph, along with his wife, Rita and two other artists, founded the National Oil & Acrylic Painter’s Society. The Orr’s brainchild, they were aided in founding NOAPS organization by local art patrons, Wm & Martha Mitchell and fellow artists Pete Peterson and Dennis T. Yates. While traveling with the World of Art Tour Joseph had met Rita Mathews, an aspiring artist, in Columbia, MO. They were married in June 1974 and stayed in Missouri, traveling and exhibiting their art together. Orr had a brief encounter with printmaking in 1977. He took private instruction in stone lithography and copper plate etching from Frank Stack, professor of art at the Univ of MO, Columbia, but painting remained his principal devotion. By 1999 Joseph had become proficient enough to have obtained Gallery representation with several Fine Art Galleries across the US. Joseph Orr currently resides in Osage Beach, Missouri, but travels to paint and visit his gallery representatives and Exhibit Openings. PHILOSOPHY: For me the idea is that painting should follow some form of illustration and truth telling. Basically, the premise of my painting philosophy, is to build layers of narrative into my paintings. A place or landscape scene is never defined satisfactorily without it’s relationship to color and composition. It is important to balance fact with imagination. “ART REFLECTS THE SOUL OF SOCIETY. Each stage had to be experienced and has led to a deeper understanding of what my expression in paint is all about. Painting traditional realism with good design as an important element was where I began. Now, the evolution of my painting process has brought me to a point in which the subject, the texture of the oil medium and the physical application of the brushstrokes have become profoundly intertwined. All are so necessary to the finished work that if one were to be taken away the work would be left incomplete. My hope is that the synthesis of the subject, design, expressive brush strokes and the texture of the paint come together to create a work of art in which the viewer experiences all of these elements at once in a powerful statement on canvas. “New Mexico is a land of earthy colors and textures. Rocks, dirt, twiggy plants, reds and ochres against blue grays, dry, wet, cold, hot, mostly hard and rough create a movement in visual and tactile rhythms that surround me. There are times when I am standing in the New Mexico landscape on a warm day when I want to lay down and embrace it. I can’t help but be madly in love with the textures of everything around me. I am drawn to the irresistible forces that seem to bring me closer to the earth. The more I experience these textural qualities of the land, the more I am compelled to use them to express what I want to say. “ Martha was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she attended Carlow University and received a degree in art and art education. Later she studied art at the Maryland Institute College of Art and the University of Southern California. At the beginning of her career she worked as an art teacher and art department head in Maryland and California. After becoming a full-time artist she taught watercolor and oil painting workshops in the United States and abroad. After moving to Colorado she became a master instructor for a branch of the Art Students League in Colorado Springs and then set up her own classes in her studio where she presently teaches on a weekly basis. She was director for many years of large adventure workshops combining painting and exploring. Some of these adventures include Ghost Ranch, New Mexico, where Georgia O’Keefe painted, a yearly excursion on a Clipper Ship in the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas stopping at many ports to paint and an exciting workshop in Salvador, Brazil, painting the colorful region and people there. It was due to these painting trips on which the artists had to carry around all their painting equipment that she put together a compact painting travel kit that she marketed and that many plein air artists use as they travel to their many painting locations. Martha’s work has been featured in many art publications such as: Southwest Art Magazine, Artist’s Magazine, Watercolor Artist’s Magazine and Art Collector’s Magazine. Her work has been used in several books on painting; “Making Your Watercolors Look Professional,” by Carole Katchen, The Best of Watercolor Series, Rockport, Press, “How to Paint Better Watercolor Paintings,” by Jerald Brommer and Jerald Brommer’s Art Education Posters for High Schools. Her work has received many awards in national juried competitions including numerous best of shows awards.
