About the Item

Excerpt from the Palm series 2023 - Present The artworks presented here depict palm-like plants in mostly nocturnal and enigmatic settings, often against mountainous backdrops and other elements of the landscape. Palms, resilient by nature, withstand high winds, extreme temperatures, and unpredictable weather conditions. The vibrant and dynamic foliage emanates energy and vitality. The upright trunk and expansive leaves convey a sense of life and vigor. The palm, positioned as the central subject matter, assumes an almost figurative presence within the space, symbolizing selfhood and the capacity to endure challenging circumstances while persisting through life. The textured surfaces of the paintings reflect a struggle to capture each image, a process marked by determination, experimentation and chance. Though initially inspired by reference photos, the scenes depicted evolve into a realm where the application of paint and surface take precedence over the actual scene itself. The series of paintings was influenced by the text “All Things Are Possible” by Lev Shestov, a book the artist frequently returns back to for inspiration and content. The paintings, created with oil on canvas using a blend of linseed oil and wax, undergo a transformative journey over time. They are reoriented, worked on upside down, scraped down, and rebuilt until reaching resolution, mirroring the artist's creative process of overcoming challenges and finding new forms of expression. This painting comes stretched on 1.5" stretcher bars. Framing options available and can be shipped framed for no extra charge.

The Palms #4 (Abstract painting) Charcoal on paper - Unframed. Baribeau constructs his paintings layer upon layer, building color, form and texture into viscous, impasto compositions, on supports that are themselves often thick, and even sculptural. He scratches and scrawls across his surfaces, infusing visceral emotion and energy into the work. His imagery is so layered and dimensional that even his works on paper convey a sense of texture and depth. Critics have connected Baribeau to a range of aesthetic positions, including everything from Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art to the 19th century Hudson River School, and compared him variously to the likes of Robert Rauschenberg, Joan Mitchell, Cy Twombly, and Willem de Kooning. In truth, Baribeau employs a distinctive aesthetic voice that is personal and instantly recognizable, despite its multiplicity. His visual world is one where primordial, organic nature collides with the geometric, manufactured world, and where certain signature visual cues, such as black and white stripes, checkerboards, dots, and flashes of neon color appear and disappear. His work is included in several institutional collections, including those of the Neuberger Museum, Purchase, NY; Morgan Stanley...
