About the Item

Rainy Days 2022 Acrylic on canvas 10 x 8 inches Signed and dated on verso by the artist Matthew Hanzman is a self taught painter whose work ranges from bold, whimsical figuration to painterly abstraction. His pieces are notable for their bold colors and subject matter, focusing on the true self, freedom and alternative ways of being. At 27 years old, he has established a distinct, emotive style that resonates, combining the aesthetic of childhood cartoons and video games with more serious themes of isolation and the search for meaning. His work has been exhibited throughout the United States in both solo and group presentations and is held in private and public collections worldwide. Matthew’s DIY spirit of originality and authenticity is reflected in his powerful, precise works. Statement on the work: Welcome to Matthew’s distinct lone figures series. These vivid scenes are pure and surreal like cartoons and each one tells a story of an outcast. We feel the joys and sorrows of solitude, from freedom and bliss to angst and confusion, set in vast, fruit flavored lands. Some of the loners are frustrated and dejected, alienated and lost. Others are funky and groovy carving their own paths but they are all whimsical and expressive, honest portrayals. Animal friends and bizarre motifs add to these far out journeys and each canvas sparks reflections. They are so crisp and graphic they seem digital while remaining raw and each one is an episode in the animated saga. John Randall Nelson’s paintings are layered with his own personal language consisting of patterns, symbols, and archetypes that may not make any literal sense but play on subconscious associations. His paintings are thick with paint, poured pigment, and saturated washes with layers of drawing and collage. While Nelson's work is akin to outsider, folk art, it should be noted that he received his MFA from Arizona State...
