About the Item
Framed size: 33" x 38"
This work is signed and dated '97.
La Chapelle captures a charming rural chapel, likely situated within the idyllic landscapes of Brittany or Normandy - bathed in soft, natural light. The structure, serene and unassuming, rests amid a harmony of land and sky. Rolling hills, verdant foliage, and the gentle architecture of the chapel are rendered with subtle, lyrical brushwork, evoking both spiritual calm and atmospheric grace. The pastel blues and purples in the sky express a beautiful warm summers day as the sun is setting.
Maufra’s approach combines Impressionist lightness with Pont-Aven-inspired clarity. His compositions frequently exhibit short, vibrant brushstrokes and thoughtful use of colour, hues that respect naturalism yet convey emotional warmth. He balanced luminosity, form, and emotional tone to evoke both the material presence and poetic resonance of landscape. Maufra painted landscapes and marine scenes throughout Brittany, Normandy, and beyond - seeking beauty in nature’s shifting light. His works, like La Chapelle, reflect simplicity and serenity, achieved through a poetic synthesis of colour and form. He was connected with major Impressionist exhibitions, notably through dealer Durand-Ruel, earning recognition in key public collections across Europe and North America.
Maufra's paintings are held in major institutions, including Musée d’Orsay, Tate, and the Art Institute of Chicago and remain admired for their poetic clarity. His works continue to fetch strong interest among collectors of late 19th- and early 20th-century French Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. La Chapelle exemplifies Maufra’s devotion to natural beauty and quiet introspection whilst painting en plein air. With luminous brushwork and sincere tone, the painting creates a timeless moment of peace - a testament to his ability to fuse structure and atmosphere into a poetic whole.

Maxime Maufra
French artist Maxime Maufra began painting at aged 18, under the influence of local artists to him in Nantes. Sent to Liverpool by his father in the early 1880s, Maufra visited the National Gallery, where exposure to J.M.W. Turner’s dramatic light and colour profoundly influenced his artistic vision. Whilst working in business, Maufra painted in his free time and debuted at the Paris Salon in 1886, earning praise from critic Octave Mirbeau, who reviewed his early works favourably. In 1890, Maufra abandoned his commercial path and moved to Brittay. There he encountered Paul Gaugin and Paul Sérusier, absorbing Synthesist Ideas, yet always maintaining independence from any artistic school. His first solo exhibition took place in Paris in 1894 at Le Barc de Boutteville, launching his career under the representation of the prominent art dealer Durand-Ruel, a partnership that lasted throughout his life. Maufra became the first painter to reside in the fames Bateau-Lavoir, a Montmartre artists' hub later linked to Picasso and other avant-garde figures. Maufra’s work remains in prominent collections worldwide, including the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the Tate in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
