Michael Sanders A Walk on Sheringham Beach Original Seascape Painting Mixed-Media on Canvas Ccanvas Size: H 76cm x W 121cm x D 3.8cm Sold Unframed Ready to Hang Please note that in situ images are purely an indication of how a piece may look. A Walk on Sheringham Beach is an original seascape painting by Michael Sanders. It was inspired by a walk along the shore one Spring afternoon. The sun’s rays were breaking through the heavy clouds and casting a wonderful light on the sea and beach below. I used a lot of texture in the foreground to emulate the sand and flint beach with its wonderful old breakwaters. A distant couple with their dog were walking by the water’s edge making the most of the open space and fresh air. Michael Sanders after leaving Art School with a Fine Art Degree moved to North Norfolk. At this time he painted landscapes mainly in watercolour and became a well-known local artist. As Michael Sanders began to travel more in Europe his painting style evolved and he worked a lot more in oils, some¬times on much larger canvasses. He painted in Sienna, Florence and Paris and became more interested in texture and strongly contrasting light and shadow. He then spent a year living in Bangkok, working in watercolour and charcoal as well as oils. The work was vibrant, with bold strokes of charcoal, usually on paper. Michael Sanders won a prize in the Laing competition and his work was chosen for the Royal Institute of Oil Painters annual exhibition in the Mall Galleries. Michael then moved to the South of France, drawn by the light and atmosphere and set up a studio in Valbonne. He continued to exhibit in England but now also showed his work in Monaco, St Paul de Vence and Antibes. Café scenes, crumbling plaster walls and his portrayal of the architectural forms of plane trees became his hallmarks. By now many publishers had reproduced his paintings as fine art cards and limited edition prints. After six years of living abroad, Michael Sanders had a strong desire to return to England and put down his roots: “I felt a real urge to return to the UK where I now have two studios: one in Norfolk, and one in Cornwall. Both counties inspire me for different reasons and I enjoy the challenges both landscapes offer me. It is from my Cornish studio that new techniques have emerged, which have filtered through into my Norfolk landscapes. Mixed media techniques, on both canvas and paper, using a more impasto style together with texture over-painted with washes and translucent glazes help describe foreground detail and texture without becoming too illustrative. From the moment I could walk I held a paint brush, and all these years later I’m still holding it and making a living as an artist. Painting has always been a kind of spiritual crutch for me – always there to rely on. I paint almost every day – of course I take holidays but am always desperate to get back to my paints.”

His work was both sensitive and intelligent and like himself, without showiness or pretension. He was keeper of the Royal Academy Schools and a popular figure who taught many well-known artists including Martin Yeoman, Peter Kuhfeld, Edmund Fairfax-Lucy and Jane Corsellis. Greenham was born in Streatham and educated at Dulwich before studying English at Magdalen College, Oxford, followed by Fine Art at the Byam Shaw School of Art in Kensington from 1936-39 under the supervision of Ernest Jackson. After leaving Byam Shaw he became a schoolmaster at Magdalen College School, Oxford and was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1951 and an R.A. in 1960. In 1964 he succeeded Sir Henry Rushbury as Keeper of the Royal Academy Schools, a position he held with distinction until his retirement in 1985. The Keeper has the responsibility of running the RA Schools and Greenham showed himself to have great sympathy and understanding for his students. In retirement he was able to concentrate entirely on his painting and tended to paint places he knew well such as the Norfolk coast, Northumberland, Oxfordshire and Annecy as well as his wife, the painter Jane Dowling...
