About the Item

Late 20th century fauvist, oil on crumpled paper laid on board, landscape by French artist Michel Chambon. Signed bottom right. Presented in two tone green and gold, etched wooden frame. The French artist Michel Chambon's approach to painting takes shapes with curves and great subtlety, sensuality and voluptuousness. The artist (born in Provence in 1962) began making pictures at a very young age in his father's atelier. Later, during a trip to Paris, he discovered the French movement CoBrA also known as the International Organisation of Experimental Artists (IAE), created in 1948 in response to a dispute between abstract painting and figurative painting. In his work, Chambon refutes the academic and reductive distinction between figurative and abstract painting and creates a kind of "dream realism", attempting thereby to materialise and capture the psychic world, the world of esotericism and that of imagination. He depicts the silhouettes of women, pleasure, sensuality, euphoria and passion and mixes their energies in an epic whirlwind. Chambon, having developed a passion for Primitivism and works by expressionist artists, which show contrast, violence, and immediacy, constructed his own approach, at the crossroads of several techniques and different philosophies. The artist feeds his search for colours, deep and intense shades, his love of the arabesque shape, which is suggestive and almost carnal and his passion for refined lines and minimalist gestures. He is interested in preceptors of the Fauve artists and developed a formal design that is constructive and expresses colour. His subjects are free and are therefore a locus for experiencing matter and shapes, collages, and crumpled paper. The painting dimensions without frame are 40cm x 30cm.
