Mischa Kallis was a career artist and Art Director for Hollywood’s largest entertainment institutions of the time. Born in 1903 in Romania, Mischa started painting at age 10. He was completely self-taught, highlighting his incredible innate talent. Mischa’s father owned a cheese shop in Romania and wanted him to join the family business. Mischa had different plans, however, and at age 16, he left his homeland to pursue life as an artist in America, stopping in Paris to live and paint for a year, before settling in Kansas City, Missouri. Mischa started in advertising in 1923 and eventually moved to New York where he became the National Art Director for Paramount. He held that position from 1931 to 1942. It was in 1942 that Mischa was offered the position of Art Director for Universal Studios. He moved his family to Hollywood, CA to take that role. Mischa worked for Universal until the 1970s. Mischa loved two things above everything else - his family and painting landscapes. He painted most every weekend. His son Albert Kallis estimates that he produced around 35-40 paintings per year, but that Mischa destroyed at least half of these works. While Mischa was critical of his own work, he did not like his work to be criticized by others. Therefore, he did not seek to promote his works or participate in exhibitions. He primarily painted for an extensive list of private collectors who demanded his work. According to his son Albert, “they would have taken paintings off Mischa’s easel if they could.” Those that were fortunate to have access to Mischa and his paintings were loyal collectors and most held their Mischa Kallis works long-term, many of which are still in the hands of those collectors, their families, or have been passed down by Mischa to his family. Mischa’s talent was widely known in the entertainment circles and artist community. He was a friend of the well-known artists Moses and Raphael Soyer. Mischa and his wife lived in a very well-known landmark Hollywood Hills home, the Kallis-Sharlin House, designed for him and his wife by architect Rudolph Schindler in 1946. Mischa later sold the home to his cousin, Jacqueline Drucker, a noted concert pianist, and her husband, William Sharlin. Mischa’s son Stanley was a television producer and writer for shows including “Hawaii 5-0,” “Mission Impossible,” and “Columbo.” His other son, Albert, was a professional illustrator and art director like his father. Albert also was one of the founders of IHOP, The International House of Pancakes. Mischa Kallis stopped painting around 1985 and passed away in 1987. His life’s passion for art, landscapes, and family lives on through his incredible works and legacy.
