About the Item

Framed size: 17" x 21" Making a Run by Montague Dawson vividly portrays a historic sailing vessel battling rough seas. The ship strides forward under full sail, decks awash, rigging taut and dramatic. Crew members brace against the elements with resolute determination. Golden light breaks through brooding clouds, illuminating both vessel and sea. Thematically, the painting exudes energy, drama, and a deep sense of authenticity. Dawson balances precision and spontaneity - his rigging and sails are detailed yet alive, rendered with disciplined yet fluid brushstrokes. The sea churns with layered textures conveying swell and spray. A restrained, naturalistic palette - stormy greys and steely blues offset by glints of warm sunlight, creates tension and mood. His expertise in tonal values shines through the subtle transitions in sky and sea, honed from monochrome war illustrations. Despite no formal art school, Dawson mastered marine painting under Charles Napier Hemy while serving in the Royal Navy during WWI. He observed events firsthand; such as the German fleet surrender and produced detailed illustrations for publications like The Sphere and The Graphic. Making a Run impeccably showcases Montague Dawson’s mastery: an enthralling marine drama rendered with authenticity, rich tonal mood, and powerful storytelling. This painting glides between technical realism and evocative atmosphere - an enduring tribute to both ocean life and one of Britain’s greatest maritime artists.
