About the Item

This artwork vividly captures a serene lakeside scene, dominated by the rich interplay of colors and textures. The foreground features a small dock with boats securely moored, their white and blue covers contrasting with the vibrant turquoise water. The middle ground reveals the dramatic rise of rugged cliffs, their earthy tones accentuated by the warm sunlight. The sky above is a tapestry of swirling clouds, rendered in soft whites and muted grays, adding a dynamic sense of movement. The artist's brushwork is confident and expressive, skillfully capturing the reflections and ripples on the water's surface. "Solebury Valley"
By William Langson Lathrop
Located in Lambertville, NJ
Signed lower right. Complemented by a period frame. William L. Lathrop (1859-1938) Deemed “Father of the New Hope Art Colony”, William Langson Lathrop was born in Warren, Illinois. He was largely self-taught, having only studied briefly with William Merritt Chase in 1887, at the Art Students League. Lathrop first moved east in the early 1880s, and took a job at the Photoengraving Company in New York City. While there, he befriended a fellow employee, Henry B. Snell. There he met and married an English girl, Annie Burt. Upon returning to New York, he tried his hand at etching, making tools from old saw blades...
