About

Nannie Ruth Ransom (American, 1906-1991). She was from Enid Oklahoma. Nannie Ruth Ransom NR Ransom or NR Brown as some of her earlier works are signed was my great grandmother. She went by Ruth as she didn’t like the name Nannie. Nannie Ruth Brown was born on January 12, 1906 to Rachel D. Haines and William H. Brown and grew up on the family farm that her mother along with her parents had staked out during the Oklahoma land rush of 1893 known as the Cherokee Strip Run. Her mother died in 1910 when she was 4 years old and was raised by her father. Ruth began drawing while attending Sunny Slope School. In the 6th grade she did her first water color of an Indian Chief on his knee, arms uplifted in prayer with 3 little Indian pots on the ground with slender wisp of smoke curling up into the sky, with a little fire scene between the 3 pots on a cliff facing a sunset sky. Her father sold this painting to Frank Matoy a full blooded Indian who was a section foreman for the Santa Fe Railroad for $1.50. In the summer between 6th grade and high school she took a course in free hand drawing and charcoal. Later she began oil painting lessons from a Mr. Thompson of Enid Oklahoma though after 10 lessons he skipped the country. After 1930 she took 2 semesters work of art at Phillips University. She married George R. Ransom(died Aug 8 ,1981) in 1924 and had two children a son Dellis L. Ransom born March 21, 1925 died 1980 and daughter Delorah Rosalie Massie born April 27, 1929 died Oct 14, 2017 Ruth painted some notable portraits. To name a few: Dr. Felix Adams, founder of the State Hospital at Vinita, Oklahoma and was given to the hospital in his memory after his death. Anna Scruggs, then head of the Enid State School and P.C. Simon a Lawyer in Enid, Oklahoma. Her passion however was painting Landscapes. Some of her scenes are of Mt. Shuksan in Washington, Lake Maligne in Canada, Grand Canyon in Arizona, Bryce Canyon in Utah and Yellowstone National Park just to name a few. Ruth has had exhibits of her paintings in Oklahoma, New Mexico and Montana. Sales in Anaconda, Montana, Colorado, Alaska, Virginia, Arizona and California. There are even some overseas in Turkey and South Africa and goodness knows where else. Ruth also did floral arrangements and ceramics. Ruth won several awards at many state exhibitions and county fairs on her paintings, ceramics and floral arrangements. (mostly 1st and 2nd place, we still have some of her ribbons) She did green ware, pottery, dishes, ceramics signed RUTH which she made, painted and fired herself. Ruth could make and arrangement out of just about anything. She was once challenged by her daughter that she could make an arrangement out of a fence post and win a prize. Ruth took the challenge and went for a walk in the pasture, which was barren of trees and plant material for flower arranging as could be, and came back with four pieces of flat very weathered boards, (nearest thing she could find to a fence post) a rosette of gray new growth thistle leaves and two or three pink wild flowers and some rocks her daughter had collected, presto she made it into a beautiful centerpiece then stated “ now here is your fence post arrangement it was fun, but I doubt it would win a prize.” She attended Davis Park Christian Church in Enid and taught piano and gave recitals in the fellowship hall. She bought a kiln and taught ceramics, and art too. She died peacefully in her sleep on December 11, 1991
