About the Item

A stunning oil painting depicting a figure of a woman in the lush green grass picking flowers. The serene, sunlit landscape is filled with wildflowers, mostly red and pink hues, set against a backdrop of tall trees with dense green foliage. The way the light hits the trees and the barn in the distance creates a beautiful luminosity. A cheery blossom tree is seen as well, depicted with delicate pink blossoms and we can almost feel them drifting through the breeze. A story is being told through this large canvas, the scene is set with a peaceful, pastoral atmosphere, and the skillful use of light and shadow has created a stunning depth anchoring this sense of tranquility. Tull was known for painting everyday life, figurative scenes depicting life in Budapest, London and Vienna. He was profoundly active, picking up his subjects from villages, the city, parks, lakesides, and much more. This piece is a pertinent example of countryside life in Budapest, with much detail. This painting is signed and dated by the artist lower right and it is painted oil on stretched canvas. Art measures 42 x 69 inches Edmund Tull also known as Ödön Tull, was a Hungarian painter and graphic artist born in 1870 in Székesfehérvár, known for his Landscape paintings. He started his career as a lithographer in Budapest, and then studied at the Model Drawing School and decorative painting at Andrássy's design school. For a few years, he supported himself by painting in rooms, and then he continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Milan and the Julian Academy in Paris as a student of Jean-Paul Laurens and William Bouguereau. Tull made a study trip to Trieste, the Netherlands, and Tunisia, and he had his first exhibition in 1891, showcasing watercolors at the Műcsarnok. He also exhibited his work in several cities across Europe, including Budapest, Venice, Munich, Vienna, Rome, and London. Tull's illustrations were published in numerous newspapers, and also were featured in various magazines and books, and he also designed postage stamps. He won several awards for his graphic illustrations. His first work, "The Cathedral of Notre Dame," attracted attention at the exposition in Budapest in 1896, while his etchings are especially valued in London and Vienna. His best-known works are: "Peasant Mowing," "A Lane in Dort," and "The Island of Capri," in the historical art museum of Budapest; and "The Smithy," owned by Archduchess Isabella. Tull died in 1911 in Budapest, and his works can be found in public collections and in the Hungarian National Gallery. PROVENANCE: Estate of a Private collection Long Island, New York; Private Collection Manhattan, New York; Lilac Gallery Collection. The piece will be stamped from Lilac Gallery on its verso.
