Certified on verso: "Painted by Olof Arborelius certifies E. T. Arborelius". Provenance The artist's legacy, no. 512. Then inherited by the artist's son Erik T. Arborelius (1883‑1974). Exhibited National Museum, Stockholm, "Olof Arborelius. Memorial Exhibition", 11 February-10 March 1943, cat. no. 61. Olof Arborelius was in Italy in the fall of 1870 to January 1872. The majority of his works during his stay in Italy are plein air studies. During the summer of 1871 he visited Naples and Capri. In a letter dated Capri June 16, his writes: (V. Loos, The Breakthrough of Open-Air Painting in Swedish Art 1860‑85, 1935, p. 114): “On the 15th I traveled here by steamer from Naples. I intend to stay here during the hottest time as this place is particularly suitable for this. I half rented a couple of quite nice rooms next to the seashore in the Marina, as the fishing village is called. The building style is completely oriental with domes on the roof and a vault inside. / In the afternoon, you sit with your family on the high balcony and watch the evening light turn into night divided by a short twilight.” Arborelius' Italian studies are among the earliest known plein air paintings by a Swedish artist active in southern Europe in the second half of the 19th century, after Alfred Wahlberg and Gustaf Rydberg. Viggo Loos, op. cit., p. 122 writes: "Alfred Wahlberg's and Gustaf Rydberg's pictures form an overture to our plein air painting. Arborelius' Italian studies, with their coloristic sensitivity and their intensive study of air and light, can rightly be included in that overture. In them, the artist reached an artistic peak under French influence.” Arborelius sent several of his plein air studies from Rome to Stockholm to be exhibited at the Art Association. In a review from the exhibition from December 1871 in Posttidningen, 3 January 1872, the general criticism is positive: "They now have more richness in color and harmony" (Loos. op. cit., p.122). In the catalog for the memorial exhibition at the National Museum in 1943, the art historian Folke Holmér wrote: "His sketches from the Mediterranean coast are among the most painterly in his early production and can easily measure up to the best that Swedish artists have achieved in Italy."
