Paul de Frick
Noted French artist Paul De Frick studied with Gustave Boulanger and Luc Olivier Merson. He would go on to exhibit at the La Société des Artistes Français, obtaining an honorable mention in 1914. He is known for often adding unusual poetic detail to his paintings. De Frick is almost a precursor of a future generation of Expressionists such as Gabriel Dauchot. Here he depicts the Square d'Auvers, at the foot of Montmartre, with the Sacré Coeur Basilica in the background. The Square d'Auvers featured a statue of Diderot sculpted by Leon Lecointe is no longer there; it was melted down by the Nazis during the occupation.
