About the Item

This wonderfully evocative work aligns with one of the most significant movements in 19th-century European landscape painting, reflecting a major shift toward Naturalism and the direct observation of the environment. The painting depicts a clearing in the Forest of Fontainbleau, where artists from the Barbizon artists' community such as Corot, Pousseau and Millet painted regularly. Crucially however, our painting is no straightforward Barbizon painting: clearly, it was created by an artist deeply versed in Neo-Classical discipline and the paysage historique tradition. Compelling, yet unsigned, it exhibits several key stylistic and technical characteristics that align strongly with the oeuvre of the French historical landscape painter, Paul Flandrin (1811–1902). Flandrin, a student of Ingres, maintained a consistent and recognisable approach that separates his work from his contemporaries. The composition of the painting strongly reflects Flandrin’s academic training and his conscious revival of the 17th-century classical landscape, particularly that of Nicolas Poussin. The scene is not merely a spontaneous view of nature, but a carefully constructed vista. It is organised into distinct, legible, using natural elements—such as the grouping of trees on the left and the recessional plane of the field on the right—to guide the viewer's eye. Flandrin's work is celebrated for its structural clarity, where masses (trees, foliage) and gaps (the clearing, the sky) alternate purposefully. The inclusion of a small figure often serves as a focal point, anchoring the classical balance. The specific handling of color and atmospheric effect points to Flandrin’s dual practice of working on the motif (plein-air studies) and refining those studies in the studio. While we can see dense foliage, the overall palette remains remarkably clear, avoiding the muddiness typical of less refined landscape painters. Flandrin, known for dusting off Poussin's techniques, employed a "clear and brilliant palette" even in his sketches. As noted by critic Charles Clément, Flandrin's execution was "systematic and tight." This is evident in the current work's meticulous rendering of greenery—not a loose, dashed Impressionist handling, but a controlled application of paint used to build form, maintaining respect for the contour and volume of each natural element. The harmonious compositional structure, the refined clarity of the light and colour, and the underlying linear rigour are all hallmarks of Paul Flandrin's mature style. In the absence of a signature, I would venture that these stylistic consistencies provide compelling evidence for an attribution to Paul Flandrin. An oil on panel measuring 24 x 19 cm at sight, the overall framed size is 45 x 40.5 cm.

Barbizon Fontainebleau region Impressionist French summer landscape with figure
Located in Norwich, GB
A wonderful view of the heartbreakingly beautiful Fontainebleau/Barbizon region, which was home to some of the greatest painters of the 19th and early 20th Century. The particular spot presented here is the river Loing at Montigny-sur-Loing, where Cezanne and Sisley loved to paint. The village is just a short walk away from Grez-sur-Loing, where John Singer Sargent, Francis Brooks Chadwick, Robert Vonnoh, Edward Simmons...

American Impressionist: Springtime, a sunny path in France 19thC oil painting
By William Baptiste Baird
Located in Norwich, GB
This beautiful and light filled painting testifies of a new dawn: in the 1880s the landscape and animalier artist William Baird turns to Impressionism. Our Sunny Path, with looser brushwork and lighter colours, convey the fleeting nature of the present. Our lovely oil on canvas may well be homage to Claude Monet - according to Baird's inscription on the stretcher, it was painted in Mantes, which is only about 6 miles from Vétheuil, where Monet was living and working in the 1880s! William Baptiste Baird was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1847, but as an adult moved to Paris to perfect his painting technique. In Paris, Baird studied under Adolphe Yvon...
