Paul Leon Felix Schmitt
Carriage ride in the countryside on a summer's day c 1880 Impressionist painting

ca 1880

About the Item

A sunny but temperate summer's day in the countryside: it's the perfect time and place to go for a stroll or a ride. This fresh and idyllic composition makes us, the viewers, feel like we are part of the excursion: the painting is wonderfully immersive. It is a work by French artist Paul Schmitt, the Paris-born son of Léontine Aline Pau de Saint-Martin, a pianist and painter, and the Franco-German composer Georges Schmitt. Paul studied with Antoine Guillemet and exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1879 until the end of his life. In 1888, he became a member of the Salon des Artistes Français and received the bronze medal at the Universal Exhibition in Paris the following year. Around the turn of the century, Schmitt received commissions for frescos from town halls located around Paris, which gave a series of interesting representations of the suburbs before its urbanisation. Works by Paul Schmitt are today in the museums of Amiens, Provins, Clermont-Ferrand, Rennes, as well as in the Petit Palais in Paris, which holds a scene not so dissimilar from ours, with carriages and a walking figure in greenery. Measuring 55 x 46 cm for the canvas alone, the painting is signed at the lower right. It is painted on a quality canvas by Paul Foinet "van Eyck" - John Singer Sargent used Paul Foinet canvasses. Foinet (b.1834) was a well-known figure in late 19th-century Paris and nicknamed ‘Van Eyck’ from his supposed likeness to Van Eyck the painter.

  • American Impressionist: Springtime, a sunny path in France 19thC oil painting
    By William Baptiste Baird
    Located in Norwich, GB
This beautiful and light filled painting testifies of a new dawn: in the 1880s the landscape and animalier artist William Baird turns to Impressionism. Our Sunny Path, with looser brushwork and lighter colours, convey the fleeting nature of the present. Our lovely oil on canvas may well be homage to Claude Monet - according to Baird's inscription on the stretcher, it was painted in Mantes, which is only about 6 miles from Vétheuil, where Monet was living and working in the 1880s! William Baptiste Baird was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1847, but as an adult moved to Paris to perfect his painting technique. In Paris, Baird studied under Adolphe Yvon...
