Ensoleillé matin au Phare de Marseille ("Sunny Morning at the Lighthouse of Marseille") Impressionist Oil on Original Canvas, Paul Alexandre Alfred Leroy, c. 1890. Paul Alexandre Alfred Leroy (1860-1942) Paul Alexandre Alfred Leroy began his artistic studies in Paris, where he became a student of the renowned painter Alexandre Cabanel. A travel scholarship enabled him to visit Egypt from 1885 to 1887. From then on he visited Algeria every year and sometimes traveled to Constantinople or Persia. With the noted Orientalist painter Etienne Dinet, and the support of Baron Chasseriiau, he founded the Society of French Orientalists. in 1889. Attracted by the lights of the East, Leroy painted in an Impressionist style, and he also produced religious works such as Les aveugles de Jéricho. Paul Leroy illustrated an edition of Paul et Virginie, published in 1900. Impressionist painting characteristics include relatively small, thin, yet visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities (often accentuating the effects of the passage of time), inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience, and unusual visual angles, as seen here in Ensoleillé matin au Phare de Marseille. The effects of sunlight and the interplay of soft colors and visual perception are truly remarkable. Paul Alexandre Alfred Leroy exhibited in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Francais, of which he became a member in 1886. He won a third-class medal and a travel scholarship in 1882; the Salon prize in 1884, a second class medal in 1888, and a Silver Medal during the Exposition Universelle of 1900. Paul Alexandre Alfred Leroy was made a Chevalier of the Legion d’Honneur in 1908. The paintings of Paul Alexandre Alfred Leroy have been eagerly sought and collected for generations.
