About the Item
Work on cardboard
This work of art, a landscape painting, accurately captures the majestic essence of a snow-capped mountain range. Rugged, inaccessible peaks dominate the background, emphasizing the raw and imposing beauty of nature. The canvas uses subtle hues of blue and white to depict sparkling snow, methodically accented with soft shadows that suggest the soft light of a winter sun. In the foreground, a variety of trees, including pines and hardwoods, break the winter monotony with their deep greens and shades of brown and ocher. These pops of color provide a striking contrast to the cold mountains in the background, symbolizing the harmonious coexistence between the evergreen vegetation and the snow-covered landscape. The artist demonstrates exceptional mastery in the range of textures, from the gentle blur of distant mountains to the detailed sharpness of tree branches and needles. This juxtaposition creates a depth that draws the eye and invites the observer to explore the work in more detail. The overall impression of the painting evokes a feeling of calm and serenity, a visual homage to the splendor of nature during winter. It is a representation not only of physical beauty but also of the tranquility and resilience of the natural environment.

Paul Mathey
Paul Albert Mathey is the son of Charles and Elisa Beaujon. Orphaned at 14, he was taken in by an uncle and spent his childhood in New York. In 1931, he married Claire-Lise Monnier, a painter like him. They have exhibited together several times. Between 1905 and 1910, he took evening classes at the Art Student's League in New York. From 1910 to 1916, he attended the School of Fine Arts in Geneva and was a pupil of Barthélemy Menn. During this period, he received several awards and mentions. In 1916-1917, he worked with Ferdinand Hodler. In 1918, he became a member of the Society of Swiss Painters, Sculptors and Architects (he participated in all of its exhibitions until 1967) and of the Gottfried Keller Foundation (1954-1961). He mainly painted landscapes and still lifes. He also made some theater sets in Geneva. In 1967, he became a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters. A large part of his works can be found at the Monnier Foundation in Cartigny.
