About the Item

Pedro Lazcano (1909-1970) San Antonio Artist Image Size: 18 x 24 Frame Size: 25.5 x 31.5 Medium: Oil "Bluebonnet Path" Pedro Lazcano (1909-1970) I was always curious about Pedro Lazcano's background but never could find much information. Lazcano and Porfirio Salinas were painting and drinking buddies. I have found out bits and pieces from a few of my customers as well as a couple of Lazcano's relatives. A gentleman came into my gallery a few years ago. He spotted a Lazcano Landscape. He identified it from across the room. He had been in the oil business in the 1950s-60s. He had an office in the Tower Life building in San Antonio. He told me an interesting story about two artists. He said that two artists would come around the offices in the building every month or so trying to peddle their artwork. One was a skinny guy, and one was a little chubby. They were desperate to sell their paintings. Even though the prices were cheap the oil man wasn't finding much oil and couldn't afford to spend money on paintings. He said his rent on the office was about the same as the price for the paintings and they would have to pay the rent and pass on the art. The two artists said they would sell them for the same amount as their suite number. Their suite number was 24. They would offer their paintings to him for $24.00. The oil man still didn't buy any. After a few years of the two of them coming around one stopped coming. The skinny one kept coming around. The oilman asked what happened to the chubbier one. The skinny one said that his friend's paintings had started to sell pretty regularly, and he didn't have to knock on as many doors. You have probably guessed by now. The skinny guy was Pedro Lazcano and the chubby guy was Porfirio Salinas. I also had dealings with a son of Lazcano. Unfortunately, he didn't go into great detail about his father's life. He did tell me that prior to Lazcano becoming a full-time artist that he was an engraver for a San Antonio engraving company. After many, many years with the engraving company, with the advent of better technology, Lazcano's skills were replaced by a machine. Lazcano's position with the company was eliminated and he was left with only his artwork to try to sell to support his family. The son stated that if Lazcano didn't sell a painting or two every day that the family would not eat. He also claimed that for the last 10 years or so of his life he had a Lone Star beer in one hand and a paint brush in the other. While the son was in my gallery, he called his mother (Lazcano's wife). She told that him that Lazcano and Salinas went many times somewhere North of San Antonio to study with Robert Wood.

Gary Niblett (Born 1943) New Mexico Artist Image Size: 24 x 36 Frame Size: 38 x 50 Medium: Oil "A Fine Welcome" Nocturnal Western Biography Gary Niblett (Born 1943) Born and raised in Carlsbad, New Mexico and living with his wife, Monika in Santa Fe, Gary Niblett is a painter, primarily with oil, of western scenes especially Navajo and Pueblo Indians, cowboys on horses in landscape, and frontier genre. He has also done paintings from his travels such as Streets of Warsaw and Women of Golondrinas, and during these travels exhibited work in Moscow, Taiwan, Beijing and the Royal Watercolor Society in London. From birth, Niblett grew up with the American West as a part of his daily life. Recognizing his talent, local ranchers paid him to do portraits of his horses. After high school graduation, he attended the Art Center School of Design* in California and then spent eight years in Los Angeles with Hanna-Barbera* animation studios as a background and animation artist. There he met his wife, Monika, and they married in 1970. Deciding to focus on western art, Niblett left commercial art in 1973. He and his wife, Monica, returned to New Mexico where they live in an adobe style home. In New Mexico, he has received much attention for the quality of his painting. In 1990, he was named "Distinguished Calendar Artist" for New Mexico Magazine, and one of his oil paintings is in the collection of the New Mexico state capitol building. "LOST MAPLES TEXAS"
Located in San Antonio, TX
Carl Hoppe 1897-1981 San Antonio Artist Image Size: 28 x 28 Frame Size: 33.5 x 33.5 Medium: Oil "Lost Maples" Texas Biography Carl Hoppe 1897-1981 Carl Thomas Hoppe, born 22 August 1897 in San Antonio, TX, son of German immigrants August and Teresa Hoppe, died 15 January 1981 in San Antonio at age 83 [San Antonio Express-News, 16 January 1981]. A resident of the Alamo Heights district, his primary employment was salesman at Joske's Department Store in San Antonio [San Antonio City Directory]. In the 1920s, he married Frances Rose, but they apparently had no surviving children. He was active as an artist in the mid 1900s through at least the 1960s. He is best known for landscapes in an impressionistic style. He signed his works with a simple "C. Hoppe" and sometimes included a brief descriptive phrase on the back of the painting or in pen & ink on a paper label with an inscription about the painting or the person to whom it was presented. Some of his original frames appear to be home-crafted. He is reported to have studied under several more-notable Texas artists who worked in the San Antonio area, including Porfirio Salinas, Robert Wood, Jose Arpa, and Julian Onderdonk. Upon opening an exhibit of his works at the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum in Canyon, Texas in 1997, the museum curator stated "Hoppe's high place in the Hill Country art...
