A robust and charming work that exemplifies the artist's characteristically lyrical brushwork, elegantly expressed here in a harmonious palette of turquoise, lavender, peach and other gentle pastel shades. Viggo Rorup was still a student at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts when he made his 1928 debut at the Free Exhibition at the Charlottenborg Palace. Following his graduation in 1930, he moved to Odsherred, where he continued his studies under Karl Bovin. Together, they formed the foundation of the avante-garde group of Modernists, The Corner, that first introduced the principles of Modernism to Danish painting. Squares is a bridge between Mondrian and the Hard-edge abstraction movement. Clearly, this is a very early work because the artist has not yet found his mature style. The flat squares of uneven proportion, are in a formal but off-axis vertical /horizontal grid structure. Perhaps it's the artists take on a "drunk Mondrian" where the squares stumble to align themselves. Each square shape is different in shape and color and with visible brushstrokes and light impasto. Signed lower left, 'Mogens Hertz' (Danish, 1909-1999) and painted circa 1955. This Danish Impressionist artist first studied with the classically-trained Academician, Laurits Ring and, subsequently, with the notable Danish photographer and Impressionist painter, Rostrup Boyesen. After an influential study trip to Paris in 1930, Hertz continued his formal studies at the Charlottenborg Academy before moving from Copenhagen to the idyllic countryside outside Gudhjem. There, he became a founding, and leading, member of the Bornholm School and his work came to exemplify the group's lyrical portrayal of landscapes, painted in a loose and painterly, Impressionist style that can often border on abstraction. From 1930-1941, Hertz traveled and studied widely, including in France, Holland, German, Norway and Sweden. He was the recipient of numerous prizes and juried awards including the August Schiøtt scholarship (1948) and the Frederik Sødring prize (1939). He also exhibited widely and with success including, for many years, at the Royal Danish Academy's Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition (from 1937), Sweden (1980), Bornholm Art Museum (1985) and the Vejen Art Museum (1983). Mogens Hertz is well-listed in art biographical reference works including Benezit. This piece is a wonderful Mid Century pertinent example of Nannot de Groot's works from the prime of his career with thick use of impasto oil paint, and gestural brushwork throughout. In 1957 it was a transitional year from painting figures in his New York studio to his new studio into the countryside. And in 1959 he and his wife came back to Provincetown Massachusetts and rented a small cabin that was in a field belonging to Mary Cecil Allen on the west end. It was a small space, and there was a tree that was outside the front door, he was inspired and painted this tree over and over, and soon it was the beginning of a whole new series. The brush landscape that was outside of the window of the cabin became a focal point of this series and every year it would change, picking up inspiration to depict the tree in a new way each year. This piece is signed and dated 59' by the artist upper right corner and it comes housed with the original Mid-Century wood frame with gold rim and hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed.
