About the Item

This is a one of a kind conceptual painting by local San Diego artist, Perry Vàsquez. Its dimensions are 12.5 x 12.5. It comes in a neutral wooden frame. The artist uses an alternative process using heat transfer of a photograph onto canvas. He then paints over the photograph making each copy unique using an impasto painting technique by applying thick paint on to the canvas. This painting depicts a palm tree on fire against a blue sky. Vàsquez focuses primarily on his exploration of various iterations of palm trees. Ubiquitous in Southern California, and historically viewed as a provider of nourishment, shelter, and bounty, the trees in Vásquez’s paintings are instead framed in peculiar or dire scenarios. Many of the trees in his work are ablaze, or are actually cell towers that pose as a living palm. They are superbly painted with layers of color and detail; they have become anthropomorphized through their portraiture-style framing on the canvas and dance-like poses. Vásquez explains, “I recall being shaken the first time I saw a burning palm tree. My response was to investigate the meaning of this phenomenon through painting and to work through my feelings of awe and dread. I want my paintings of palm trees to give viewers the idea they are standing at the base of a religious painting like a crucifixion or an annunciation. The mixture of violence and beauty seems very Christian to me and the message is similar: All things must pass. Our species can choose to protect and nurture life on our planet or we can waste it. The choice is ours.”

The Palms #2 (Abstract painting) Charcoal on paper - Unframed. Baribeau constructs his paintings layer upon layer, building color, form and texture into viscous, impasto compositions, on supports that are themselves often thick, and even sculptural. He scratches and scrawls across his surfaces, infusing visceral emotion and energy into the work. His imagery is so layered and dimensional that even his works on paper convey a sense of texture and depth. Critics have connected Baribeau to a range of aesthetic positions, including everything from Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art to the 19th century Hudson River School, and compared him variously to the likes of Robert Rauschenberg, Joan Mitchell, Cy Twombly, and Willem de Kooning. In truth, Baribeau employs a distinctive aesthetic voice that is personal and instantly recognizable, despite its multiplicity. His visual world is one where primordial, organic nature collides with the geometric, manufactured world, and where certain signature visual cues, such as black and white stripes, checkerboards, dots, and flashes of neon color appear and disappear. His work is included in several institutional collections, including those of the Neuberger Museum, Purchase, NY; Morgan Stanley...
