Piero Leidi
Piero Leidi, Glimpse of Ponte di Legno

1943

About the Item

Piero Leidi (Brescia, 1892 - Bedizzole, 1976) Mountain glimpse with Ponte di Legno Tempera on cardboard, 23 x 17 cm Signed lower right "P.Leidi"; dated 1943 and inscribed on the back Piero Leidi, an artist of Brescian descent, studied in Lugano under Luigi Rossi (1852-1923), a staunch advocate of en plein air painting until the 1880s; Rossi rekindled in Leidi a dedication to mountain views, which he never abandoned even when the artist pursued his studies at the Florence Academy. At the same time as his Florentine lessons, Leidi enrolled in the Brescia school of painting Moretto, receiving his first awards as early as 1913 for his veristic ability to render the landscape datum. His exhibition activity was limited to the first decades of the 20th century, notably documented participations at exhibitions in Milan, Turin, Cremona, Genoa, Venice and Brescia within the Independent Artists Group. Increasing prestige also allowed the artist to participate in foreign exhibitions, such as in Paris, where Leidi distinguished himself with an unprecedented vision of the mountain foreshortening. The present landscape beautifully brings together all the hallmarks of Leidi's painting: a crystalline colorism pervades the entire composition, punctuated by liquid brushstrokes that define solid volumes, in a silent restitution of a snapshot of life. The evanescent touches with which the artist patiently distinguishes the window frames and timbers along with the clusters of bricks that build a distant wall fit well with the subtle shade cut between the parche dwellings and that seems to cool the grass. Identifiable in the painting is a glimpse of Ponte di Legno, a Brescian municipality representative of the artist's output. The formal lyricism that gushes from the particular viewpoint, conferring a state of grace to the very noble poverty of the place, is mindful of the socialist realism in which Leidi participated in the adoption of these particular subjects, of mute contemplation. Several charcoal drawings depicting workers and peasants can be juxtaposed with these views, following the coeval experiences of Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo and Francesco Filippini.

Pair of landscapes Painted by Antonio Francesco Peruzzini
Located in Milan, IT
Antonio Francesco Peruzzini (Ancona, 1643/1646 - Milan, 1724) Rural landscape with river and village center Rural landscape with river and tower (2) Oil on canvas, cm 108 x 62 Expert opinion Prof. Emilio Negro Recognizable in the present pair of paintings is the hand of what Mina Gregori called "the most original and path-breaking landscape painter to emerge in the late seventeenth century," namely Antonio Francesco Peruzzini. Finally identified by Arslan in 1959 as such a "Perugino," author of a St. Sebastian in a private Milanese collection, Peruzzini has in recent times been reevaluated from his former qualification as a mere subordinate of Lissandrino (Alessandro Magnasco), in comparison with whom he turns out to be an excellent coadjutor and original landscape painter. A distant mountainous horizon, of frozen vigor, is proposed in both canvases interspersed with a spindly tree in the background that screws swirlingly to the sky. The anti-academicism and nonconformism that characterized Peruzzini's entire career appear evident here and justify in retrospect his choice of such figurative collaborators as Magnasco and Sebastiano Ricci...
